Are there any tips for painting Ikea Pax doors? I plan to redesign my white Pax doors and would like to paint them in a different color to better match my room. However, I’m unsure about the best approach to achieve a smooth and durable finish. I’m especially interested in:

- Which materials (primer, paint type) are recommended?
- Do the doors need to be sanded, or can they be painted directly over?
- Are there specific techniques or tools that help with the smooth surfaces of Pax doors?
- How can drips, bubbles, or scratches be avoided during painting?

I have some DIY experience and basic knowledge, but I want to avoid mistakes that could ruin the result later. I’d appreciate detailed advice and assume some users here have completed similar projects.

I completely understand how frustrating it can be when you put in effort and the result doesn’t turn out as expected. I also once planned to update my Pax doors and tried several approaches.

Basically, thorough preparation really helps: sanding is almost unavoidable on the smooth surfaces because paint won’t adhere well otherwise. I used fine sandpaper (grit 220) to lightly roughen the surface.

Regarding paint: make sure to use a high-quality acrylic paint suitable for furniture or doors. Water-based paints are often easier to work with, but you should check that the paint is compatible with the door material. Primer is essential; it helps the paint stick better and also protects the doors from moisture.

Tools like a foam paint roller can help achieve a smooth finish — brushes often leave streaks. My mistake was applying paint too thickly, which caused runs. It’s better to apply several thin coats and let each dry in between.

Another tip: paint in a well-ventilated area and lay the doors flat or hang them up to dry so they don’t collect dust during drying.

If you want, I can share more details later about specific types and brands I’ve had good experience with.

Ikea Pax doors usually have a melamine or foil coating, which makes the painting process more challenging.

1. Preparation: Sanding is essential to ensure the paint adheres properly. It is recommended to start with sandpaper around 240 grit to lightly roughen the surface without damaging it.

2. Primer: Use a bonding primer designed specifically for smooth and hard-to-paint surfaces, for example, acrylic- or alkyd-based primers.

3. Paint type: A solvent-based 2K acrylic or alkyd paint provides a durable and resilient finish. Water-based paints produce less odor but may be less robust on these substrates.

4. Technique: Use a spray gun or high-quality painting tools to achieve smooth and even coats. If using a brush or roller, apply thin layers and allow them to dry well between coats.

5. Drying conditions: A dust-free, well-ventilated environment is important, with an optimal temperature between about 20-25°C (68-77°F).

6. Finishing: Lightly sand between coats with fine sandpaper (320-400 grit) to prevent visible lines and promote adhesion of subsequent layers.

Following this sequence and using these materials will help achieve a long-lasting and uniform paint finish.

That is actually the crucial point. The surface is often underestimated – Ikea uses inexpensive veneers on Pax, which simply don’t provide a good base for adhesion.

Honestly: For DIYers, a spray gun is often not an option. The equipment is costly and requires practice. Anyone trying to use a roller or brush risks making mistakes.

My advice: If you don’t want to do it professionally, it’s better to go with matte spray paints as a compromise – it won’t look perfect, but sanding and brushing can also go wrong quickly.

Also, I wonder if this ultimately comes down to cost and time. It might be better to choose the doors directly from Ikea in the desired color or go for a wrap instead – then you can avoid painting marathons altogether.

I tend to be pragmatic about this: Perfectly painting Pax doors is more of a passion project for hobbyists with time and patience. Anyone attempting it without professional equipment should expect to do touch-ups.
