Hello everyone, some time ago I bought Malm furniture from Ikea, which is coated with a matte clear lacquer. Now I’m wondering how to best clean these surfaces without damaging the matte finish or causing unsightly shiny spots. Are there any special cleaning tips or products that are particularly suitable for preserving the matte texture while still cleaning thoroughly? In everyday use, I usually only use a slightly damp cloth, but occasionally there are stains that need a stronger cleaning approach. I would appreciate any experiences and suggestions, including technical advice on suitable fabrics or cleaning agents.
Please confirm this: abrasive sponges are unsuitable and damage the paint finish. For stubborn stains such as ink, special furniture cleaning products with pH-neutral agents are recommended, but they should always be tested first on an inconspicuous area. Home remedies like diluted vinegar or lemon may seem tempting but should be avoided due to their acidity, as they can harm the matte coating. Polishing pastes are a no-go – they permanently alter the surface and ruin the matte appearance.
Here’s a small practical tip from me: If I can’t remove stains immediately, I first dab them with a little water and let it sit for a while. This often helps loosen the stain without rubbing. For ink or pen marks, gently rub over them with a slightly damp eraser, but be careful! I haven’t experienced any damage this way so far 🙂 Patience and a careful approach are essential with this kind of furniture!
In the end, time and use will show how well the paint holds up. I see wear marks on furniture as character and don't worry much about it. Matte paint isn’t like high-gloss paint that reveals every scratch immediately. In my opinion, the term "gentle cleaning" is being overinterpreted here.

The term 'gentle cleaning' is, in my opinion, overinterpreted here. I find it difficult to take a general position on this. For some, the furniture is also an investment, and those who specifically choose matte lacquer want to preserve it. For others, signs of wear are not a problem. It’s a matter of personal taste, and every viewpoint is valid.
A strong recommendation: To maintain the matte surface over time, treat the furniture with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth and a mild soap solution. Daily care is essential to prevent dirt from settling. Stains should be removed immediately using gentle methods to avoid the need for harsher substances.
