Hello everyone,
I recently bought an Ikea Pax wardrobe and during assembly noticed that most of the wooden parts are made of veneered engineered wood. Since I want to keep the wardrobe in good condition for a long time, I am looking for useful tips or proven methods for caring specifically for these wooden components.

I’m especially interested in advice regarding cleaning, possible protective coatings, how to remove small scratches, and whether there are any things that should definitely not be used on Ikea Pax wooden parts—such as particular cleaning products that might cause damage.

Does anyone have experience, perhaps even with different types of wood components from Pax, that could help protect the material from wear and damage? Thanks in advance!

The wooden parts of Ikea Pax wardrobes are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard or veneered surfaces. This means they can be sensitive to moisture and harsh cleaning agents.

It is recommended to clean the surface regularly with a slightly damp, soft cloth and then dry it immediately. Alkaline or strong solvent-based cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage the protective coating.

Small scratches can be carefully repaired using special wood correction pencils or wax pastes, which are available at hardware stores. In general, direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations should be avoided to prevent unnecessary stress on the material.

To dive a bit deeper into the topic: The Ikea Pax wooden components are not actually solid wood panels, but mostly a combination of particleboard and coatings such as melamine or wood-patterned veneers. These surfaces are quite durable but have clear limitations when it comes to maintenance and cleaning.

It is important not to use aggressive cleaners or abrasive products, as these can dull the finish or cause small micro-scratches. Likewise, avoid using overly wet cloths, since moisture can seep into the edges and cause the particleboard to swell.

These correction pencils are actually a useful tool, but you should make sure to select the right color shade and test on a small area first. For larger damage, I recommend lightly sanding the surface and then treating it with a matching lacquer or wood repair marker to restore the protection.

A side question: Can you identify the type of wood components exactly? For example, whether the surfaces are mostly decorative foil or real veneer? The care instructions differ slightly depending on this.

Brief and to the point:
- Clean with a damp cloth, then wipe dry.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Repair small scratches with a furniture touch-up pen.
- Avoid water, as it can cause the material to swell.
- Avoid direct sunlight to prevent discoloration.

Here is a brief care guide suitable for Ikea Pax wooden components:

1. Before cleaning: Always start with a dry dust cloth to remove dirt particles that could otherwise damage the surface during cleaning.

2. Cleaning: Lightly dampen a soft cloth (microfiber works well) with warm water. Avoid harsh cleaners, sprays, or soaps containing aggressive substances.

3. Stains: For stubborn stains, you can add a small amount of mild dish soap to the water, but never apply it directly to the wood! Always soak the cloth first, then wipe.

4. Scratch repair: Use wax sticks or furniture repair kits with color options. A tip: For darker wood tones, choose a slightly darker stick to avoid repair spots looking too light.

5. Prevention: To protect the surface, you can apply a silicone-based furniture polish, but this is a matter of personal preference and should be used sparingly to prevent stickiness or dust attraction.

If you provide more specific details, such as the surface finish of your Pax, I can offer more tailored advice.
