FifraHello everyone,
I recently started cleaning my Billy shelves from IKEA and want to make sure I protect the surfaces as much as possible. Are there any specific cleaning tips you would recommend to properly care for both the painted and veneered surfaces of these shelves, while avoiding potential damage such as scratches, loss of shine, or stains? I am particularly interested in which cleaning products and techniques work best, as I have heard that harsh cleaners or cleaning with too much moisture might actually harm the surfaces. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

Important: don’t wipe with too much water, as that can cause damage. Good luck, you can do it! 🙂

It’s best to use a mild dish soap with warm water and a soft cloth.Interesting, but I wonder if even mild dish soap might eventually damage the surface of plastics like those used in BILLY over time. Why not just use distilled water and a microfiber cloth instead? That would be gentler and more sustainable. Does anyone have any long-term experience with this?
Also: If you really want to protect the material, frequent cleaning should be avoided. A good dry cloth is often sufficient.
I don’t find the whole thing that complicated. Just avoid scrubbing aggressively and instead wipe gently; that really helps the BILLY shelves. 🙂
Exactly! And for those who like it – a drop of dish soap in the water works great. The surfaces will thank you ;-)

I would like to point out that using vinegar is controversial due to its acidity. While it is an effective descaler, over time vinegar can damage the paint or finish.

Additionally, it should be kept in mind that BILLY shelves are often coated with melamine resin. Aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents can cause damage. A damp microfiber cloth with mild soap is usually sufficient. Other methods should be considered carefully.
