I am currently planning the renovation of my bathroom and am considering using furniture from the IKEA Platsa system. I am especially interested in whether this furniture is suitable for use in a damp room like a bathroom, given its materials and construction.
Specifically, I am wondering:
- Are the Platsa cabinets and their coatings sufficiently moisture-resistant to prevent long-term mold growth or material warping?
- How durable are the connectors and fittings in a high-humidity environment?
- Are there any experiences with special surface treatments or additional protective measures that should be applied to extend the furniture’s lifespan?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback, recommendations, or advice on potential issues. Thank you in advance!

I can understand wanting a practical and flexible solution for your bathroom with IKEA PLATSA furniture. I felt the same way and was unsure how well they would hold up in such a humid environment.
My experience: I installed the furniture in a small guest bathroom that often gets humid after showers. At first, everything seemed fine, but after about a year and a half, small swelling started to appear on the edges. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed because I was quite happy with the appearance and the modular system.
I then treated the furniture with a clear moisture-resistant protective varnish. This helped reduce the swelling, but in my opinion, there is no guaranteed protection. If you decide to go for it, take your time with a good surface treatment and maintain the furniture regularly.
I’m curious if anyone else here has had similar experiences?

I then treated the furniture with a transparent moisture-protective varnish. This is an important point I want to emphasize here. IKEA PLATSA furniture is made from coated chipboard, whose surface film provides some moisture resistance. However, this is not completely waterproof.
With regular and high humidity in the room, moisture can penetrate through the cut edges and joints, causing swelling and failure of the fasteners.
Therefore, my recommendations for bathroom use are:
- Use only in well-ventilated areas that are not directly exposed to water
- Apply additional protection with varnish or water-repellent coating to all edges and visible cuts
- Regularly check for early signs of moisture damage
- Prefer alternative materials such as MDF with waterproof paint or solid wood for wet areas
Without these measures, long-term use in wet areas is risky and potentially problematic.

With additional waterproofing treatment and a dehumidifier in the bathroom, I haven’t encountered any problems so far.
I find the system very flexible and stylistically quite modern – as long as you take the right precautions and carefully plan where to use it.
So yes, IKEA PLATSA furniture can work in the bathroom if properly protected and maintained! Keep it up, and they will last longer than expected.
