Hello everyone,

I added caster wheels to my KALLAX shelving unit to make it more mobile. Unfortunately, the unit wobbles sideways quite a bit, which is especially noticeable under load and raises concerns about stability. The shelving stands on a level floor, and all the caster wheels are new and designed for furniture use.

Does anyone have tips on how to reduce or completely eliminate the wobbling? Should I consider different caster wheels, or are there additional steps to improve lateral stability?

Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions!

Hello,
first check if the rollers are firmly mounted and do not wobble. Otherwise, wider rollers or ones with a locking mechanism often help. Additionally, diagonal bracing can be installed.

Basically, adding casters to the KALLAX shelving unit changes the contact area and load distribution. The casters reduce the surface area in contact with the floor, which can decrease lateral stability.

I recommend the following measures:

1. Use casters with locking brakes to prevent the unit from tipping.
2. Check the caster components for uniformity – different caster heights cause wobbling.
3. Install an additional brace at the back or inside to reduce twisting.
4. Choose alternative casters with a larger contact surface, as narrow casters provide less lateral support.

If there is unusually large tipping movement, additional stabilization is almost always necessary.

It's great that you want to make the shelf more mobile! 🙂 Casters are really convenient, but the wobbling can be quite annoying—I know the feeling!

I once replaced the casters on my KALLAX rolling shelf with ones that have wider rubber treads, which helped a lot! Additionally, I screwed metal brackets onto the back panel to improve lateral stability—huge difference, now it stands very securely and barely wobbles anymore!

You can do it too; sticking with it is definitely worth it!

Thanks, I hadn’t considered the locking brakes before. Are there any particular models you’d recommend that are easy to install on a KALLAX?

How can I tell which casters are good quality? The ones I have now are from the home improvement store, but maybe they were just too small and narrow.

I’d also like to know if I can add extra bracing myself without damaging the shelving unit.

I can definitely understand how frustrating the rocking can be. I had the same experience when I put my KALLAX on casters. What helped me was a combination of wider casters and reinforcing the back panel.

Sometimes it feels almost helpless when furniture assembly doesn’t go smoothly at first. But it’s great that you’re addressing the issue and looking for solutions.

Don’t worry, many people have exactly this problem. Personally, I found special heavy-duty casters at the hardware store that are more stable and provide better lateral support. Maybe you could try that as well.
