ᐅ After mold removal, there is still an odor in the KALLAX – what can be done?

Hello everyone,

I discovered mold growth in my KALLAX shelving unit, which I have now thoroughly removed. The unit was completely vacuumed, scrubbed, and treated with an anti-mold spray. However, an unpleasant, damp odor remains, especially strong in the enclosed compartments. Has anyone had experience with effectively eliminating this smell after mold removal in a KALLAX shelving unit? I want to prevent the mold odor from lingering permanently on the furniture or in the living space. Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!

Wipe with vinegar water, dry thoroughly, sprinkle the fans with baking soda and let it sit, then vacuum. Repeat two to three times.

For better results, you can treat the shelf with a dehumidifier after cleaning. This is very effective against residual moisture and odor formation.

Smell of mold is really persistent – kind of like an uninvited party guest who just won’t leave 😉.

I once read that KALLAX is made of wood particleboard. It tends to absorb odors quite well. Maybe you could try gently treating the smell with a steam cleaner? That often loosens fine particles, and the heat kills germs even better. But be careful not to get it too wet.

Or, simply place cardamom, cinnamon, or dried orange peels in the compartments – these can mask odors and create a fresh scent.

Sometimes the combination of odor absorbers and fragrances works best ;-)

Additional information:

The odor often remains because mold spores and organic residues penetrate deeply into the wood or particleboard. Eliminating it requires a multi-step approach:

1. Cleaning: Mechanical methods (vacuuming, wiping with a vinegar solution) and chemical methods (mold remover based on hydrogen peroxide).

2. Drying: Store completely dry, ideally using aids such as dehumidifiers.

3. Odor removal: Use activated charcoal, baking soda, or specialized odor-neutralizing products.

If the odor persists permanently, it may also be helpful to replace the affected parts, as residues penetrate deeply.

I had the same issue once! It’s not the most pleasant solution, but if the smell really won’t go away, sometimes the only option is a complete replacement of certain boards or modules. Replacement parts are available for KALLAX if you want to keep the shelf.

In the meantime, you can improve the room air with essential oils or scented candles. It will lift the mood again! 🙂

Thanks for the good advice. I actually started cleaning with plain vinegar water, but the issue seems to be deeper.

Hydrogen peroxide- or lactic acid-based cleaners

I’ll try that after the weekend and apply it carefully to avoid damaging the surface.

Use steam cleaners cautiously

I find that tip interesting, but I’ll need to see if I can partially disassemble the shelf to apply the steam more precisely.

Replacement parts for KALLAX

I want to try to save the piece of furniture—if nothing else works, that will go on the list, thanks!

Thanks to you all, I will follow these tips and report back on how it went 🙂
