I recently discovered that one of my Ikea Metod drawers is broken. Specifically, the side panel has cracked, causing the drawer to become unstable and not hold properly when pulled out. I want to repair it myself without having to buy a completely new drawer. Does anyone know a simple yet sturdy method to fix a Metod drawer on your own? What materials or tools would be best, and what is the recommended step-by-step process? Are there any special tips to restore the load capacity to something close to the original? Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

Hello Nonmin67, your question is very practical, which I appreciate! For a solid repair of a cracked side panel on an Ikea Metod drawer, I recommend the following approach:

- First, remove the drawer completely from the cabinet so you can work comfortably.
- Check the size of the crack and whether wood glue alone will be sufficient. Often, the Metod panels are made of particle board with a foil overlay, so you definitely need a good wood glue (please use PU or D3 wood glue, not white glue).
- Important: Glue the broken parts together very well and clamp them tightly. If clamps are not possible, heavy-duty screw clamps or ratchet straps can also help.
- Additionally, I would screw a thin solid wood strip from the inside onto the cracked area. This significantly strengthens the structure. Here you can use small wood screws that are not too long, so as not to cause further damage.
- Before reassembling, everything must dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours.
- If the foil is damaged, you can cover it with laminate adhesive or special repair foils to maintain the appearance.

This will greatly improve the stability, and usually, a completely new drawer is not necessary. If you like, I can provide more detailed tips on finishing and sanding. Good luck!

"Apply wood glue, clamp together, reinforce the inside with a thin strip and screws, let it dry. Then it works again." This is how I usually repair Ikea drawers.

Here is a structured guide that I often use:

1. Completely remove the drawer from the furniture and clean the surface.
2. Check the crack: has the chipboard completely broken through or is it just a tear?
3. In case of a complete break, apply PU wood glue to both parts, press them firmly together, and ideally clamp them with screw clamps.
4. Important: allow to cure for 24 hours without any load during this time.
5. For lasting strength, use a strip of plywood or hardwood, cut it so that it fits inside along the fracture line.
6. Secure the strip from the inside with short screws (3–4 cm (1–1.5 inches)). Make sure to place the screws so they do not go through the drawer wall or interfere later.
7. Finally, you can smooth any damaged veneer or decorative surfaces with fine sandpaper and, if necessary, apply some repair veneer or laminate adhesive.

I can only agree with that – you really don’t need anything more for a strong and clean repair.

If you have some basic DIY skills, the effort should be manageable. The key is to secure everything carefully and allow enough drying time.
