I am currently researching the Brimnes product line from IKEA and am wondering: What specific materials does IKEA use for the different Brimnes furniture pieces? I am particularly interested in the materials used for the main structures (e.g., carcasses, fronts), the types of wood or wood-based materials involved, and whether there are any special considerations regarding materials for certain parts such as drawers or doors. It is also important to me to know if IKEA uses sustainable or certified materials, as I value durability and environmental friendliness. I would appreciate detailed information, preferably including background on the manufacturing or composition.

The Brimnes series from IKEA mainly consists of engineered wood products combined with metal and glass elements, depending on the type of furniture. For the main structures such as carcasses and fronts, IKEA primarily uses particleboard with a melamine coating. These particleboards have low formaldehyde emissions, meeting modern standards for indoor air quality. Additionally, the visible surfaces are often laminated, making them more resistant to scratches and moisture.

Metal drawer runners are used to ensure durability and smooth operation. The backs and shelves are often made from thinner fiberboard panels.

IKEA emphasizes sustainable sourcing and uses FSC-certified wood or wood-based materials in most products, which is an important environmental standard. This also applies to the Brimnes series, at least for the furniture made from solid wood or engineered wood products.

Metal parts are typically powder-coated to prevent corrosion. Glass is used, for example, in display cabinet doors, usually as safety glass.

In summary: Brimnes is primarily made from high-quality particleboard with surface coatings, features FSC certification, and includes metal and glass components depending on the furniture variant.

That's exactly right—you really get a lot for your money! The melamine-coated particleboard is a great feature; it's quite durable, and you don’t have to constantly worry about your coffee damaging the cabinet.

Another advantage is that IKEA puts a strong focus on sustainability—FSC certification and so on, which is important for people like me who care about the environment.

And hey, the metal drawer slides operate very smoothly—you can definitely tell the difference compared to cheaper models.

All in all, Brimnes makes a solid impression without costing a fortune. Maybe not 100% solid wood core, but smartly combined materials that deliver on their promises.

To add: Brimnes mainly uses particle board, which is made from wood chips and binders. These engineered boards are typically sealed with melamine resin-coated surfaces, enhancing both water resistance and scratch resistance.

From a technical perspective, IKEA incorporates additional reinforcements for structural stability, such as solid wood supports at load-bearing points—usually made of pine wood to keep costs and weight down while providing the necessary rigidity.

The back panels are often made of thin hardboard, which is less durable but sufficient for their purpose. A note: the chosen melamine coating is quite durable but not easy to repair—damages are usually visible and difficult to fix.

IKEA states that their wood and wood-based materials come from sustainably managed forestry (FSC and PEFC certified). The metal drawer slides are either galvanized or powder-coated to prevent rust. For doors with mirrors or glass, tempered single-pane safety glass is used.

It is important to understand that the combination of materials aims for the best price-performance ratio rather than premium solid wood quality. If you have very high demands for durability and material density, Brimnes is solid but not a piece of furniture meant to last forever in a professional sense.
