Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding my IKEA Billy bookcases. They are placed right next to a window in my living room, which receives a lot of sunlight every day. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the color of the bookcases is fading or discoloring in some areas due to UV exposure.
I would be very interested to know what specific measures can be taken to prevent these color changes on Billy bookcases. Are there any proven protective methods or materials that can be used without damaging the furniture or limiting its use? I’m counting on your experience and advice – thank you in advance!

Hello COLESU,

I would recommend first determining how strong the direct sunlight on the shelf actually is – this is crucial for choosing the right protective measure. UV window films are an excellent option to protect all furniture in the room and have the advantage of not affecting the room’s aesthetics.

If you plan to paint the shelves, be sure to use a UV-resistant clear coat suitable for furniture surfaces to prevent damage to the finish. Pay attention to product specifications! It is also important to thoroughly clean the surface of the BILLY shelves before application to ensure better adhesion.

This topic has been relevant for me for some time – I have been wondering if the color change in BILLY shelves is simply normal when they are placed in sunny rooms.

Now I am reading quite a bit here about window films and clear coats. Does anyone have experience with how long-lasting a UV clear coat is? I don’t want to have to treat my shelf again in a few months.

UV clear coats generally protect for several years, but the durability depends on the specific product quality and exposure to light. It is important to apply the coating evenly and thinly to avoid cracking. For BILLY shelves, it makes sense to test first on a less visible area.

UV protection films on windows combined with targeted sun shading using curtains are, in my opinion, the best methods.

Thanks for the tip, that really seems to be the most practical solution.

I will start by experimenting with window films since I don’t want to change the shelving. If the films are not sufficient, I will look into the suggestion of using UV clear varnish.

Which films are recommended? Are there brands that offer particularly good protection, or is a budget-friendly option adequate for home use? Any further advice or experiences would be appreciated.
