COLESUHello everyone,
I have a question regarding my IKEA Billy bookcases. They are placed right next to a window in my living room, which receives a lot of sunlight every day. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the color of the bookcases is fading or discoloring in some areas due to UV exposure.
I would be very interested to know what specific measures can be taken to prevent these color changes on Billy bookcases. Are there any proven protective methods or materials that can be used without damaging the furniture or limiting its use? I’m counting on your experience and advice – thank you in advance!

To prevent color fading of BILLY shelves caused by UV radiation, it is advisable to consider the following points:
1. Positioning: Avoid placing shelves directly behind windows with strong sunlight exposure whenever possible.
2. UV Protection Films: Window films with high UV protection significantly reduce harmful radiation.
3. Coatings: Transparent, UV-resistant varnishes or sealants specifically designed for furniture can be applied.
4. Room Furnishings: Curtains or blinds with UV protection can further reduce the intensity of incoming light.
5. Regular Maintenance: Dust particles do not block UV light, but clean surfaces help coatings adhere better.
It should be noted that BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a foil coating, whose color is not as durable as solid wood. Therefore, external protective measures are usually more effective than treatments applied directly to the furniture.

BILLY shelves made of chipboard with a foil coating have a color that is not as durable as solid wood. Exactly, that’s why it is important to use gentle cleaning agents and avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the protective layer. From my perspective, UV protective films on windows combined with targeted sun protection using curtains are the best methods.
I applied UV protection films to the windows near my BILLY shelves, and since then, the discoloration has significantly decreased! I also keep the blinds closed during the day when it’s very sunny – that really helped 🙂
A small tip: There are also clear varnishes with UV protection that you can apply if you want to dust the shelf occasionally. Just give it a try!
