Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to extend my existing BILLY bookshelf and want to make sure I use the right screws that will guarantee long-term stability without making assembly more difficult. Since BILLY bookshelves are made from particleboard, I’m unsure whether standard wood screws can be used or if special screws are recommended that grip this material better and possibly even protect it.

I am particularly interested in which screw size, screw type (e.g., particleboard screws, wood screws, metal screws), and material (galvanized, stainless steel) work best for BILLY bookshelves. Are there any practical experiences regarding screws that should be avoided or that might cause problems when tightening later on?

Thanks in advance for your helpful recommendations!

For BILLY shelves, chipboard screws measuring 4x40 mm (1.6x1.6 inches) are very suitable. Zinc-plated screws are usually sufficient; stainless steel is only necessary if moisture is a concern. I would avoid using regular wood screws, as they do not hold as well in particleboard.

Additional information:

Particleboard screws are technically the best choice for BILLY shelves, as they are specifically designed for materials like chipboard. The partially threaded design provides better grip and prevents the screw from stripping when tightened.

Size: 4 x 40 mm (0.16 x 1.57 inches) has proven effective in practice, offering sufficient hold in the 16 mm (0.63 inch) thick chipboard without penetrating too deeply.

Material: Zinc-plated screws are cost-effective and sufficient as long as the shelves are kept in dry indoor environments. In cases of higher humidity or kitchen use, stainless steel screws are preferable due to their better corrosion resistance.

As an alternative to screws, it is also possible to use original BILLY dowels and connectors, as these are precisely matched to the shelf material. However, this is often more expensive and not strictly necessary.

It is also important to pre-drill before screwing, especially when choosing screws with a larger diameter, to avoid damaging the material and prevent splitting.

I hope this helps with your decision.

I would like to add that the term "wood screw" is quite general and does not automatically mean poor holding power. It largely depends on the screw’s thread design and material.

For BILLY shelves, however, using a particleboard screw with a coarse thread is indeed advisable, as these are specifically designed for the characteristics of particleboard and the coarse thread provides better grip and distributes stress more evenly.

I agree, however, with the common screw size of 4x40 millimeters (approximately 0.16x1.57 inches) and soft particleboard, pre-drilling is often not necessary. It depends on the type of screw.

What do others think about manufacturing tolerances and durability when screws are retightened frequently? In my experience, cheap screws tend to strip the threads in particleboard quite quickly.
