Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to purchase BILLY bookcases from IKEA and have a technical question for which I would like to hear your opinions and experiences. Specifically, I am interested in which versions of the BILLY bookcases are particularly resistant to moisture.
I want to place the shelves in a somewhat damp room – more precisely in the basement, where the humidity can be quite high at times due to lack of ventilation. So far, I have heard that the standard BILLY bookcase made of particleboard tends to swell or warp quickly, which is obviously not desirable.
Does anyone know of specific BILLY models or accessories that offer better moisture resistance? Or do you have any tips on how to pretreat or protect BILLY bookcases accordingly?
I would appreciate concrete advice, recommendations, or experiences. Thanks in advance!

I’m interested in which versions of the BILLY shelves are particularly resistant to moisture.Ah, the classic BILLY question! I once worked for a few years in a damp basement and faced similar challenges. The standard BILLY shelves are unfortunately not the best choice when it comes to moisture—the particleboard soaks up moisture and begins to swell.
My little tip: IKEA occasionally offers versions with a melamine coating—these are somewhat more moisture-resistant because the surface is less porous. But be aware, this does not fully protect against high humidity or direct splashing water.
What I did was apply a waterproof clear varnish to the shelves. Yes, it sounds like a lot of work, but this way the BILLY has lasted for years in my basement.
So either go for the melamine version plus your own extra protection, or consider storing them somewhere else.
And hey, good luck! 🙂

The particle boards literally absorb moisture and start to swell.Exactly, this effect is the biggest issue with conventional BILLY shelves in damp environments. To explain in more detail: BILLY shelves are primarily made from wood-based panels, usually particle boards covered with a decorative laminate or melamine coating. This coating provides basic protection against splashes or brief contact with moisture – but it does not offer lasting resistance to high relative humidity or standing moisture.
In such cases, I recommend using BILLY shelves with reinforced melamine coating or – even better – those made from MDF panels, as MDF absorbs less water due to its denser structure and remains more stable.
Protection can be further improved by sealing all edges with special edge banding or treating them with water-repellent paint. Because of the shelf geometry, the underside of the shelves especially needs protection, as this area is most vulnerable to moisture damage.
If you could provide more details about the intended installation location (e.g., a basement with visible moisture issues or simply an area with generally higher humidity), I could suggest additional specific protective measures.
In general, full moisture resistance with BILLY shelves can only be achieved through extra precautions, as they are not designed for wet rooms or extremely damp areas.

Does anyone know of specific BILLY models or accessories that offer improved moisture resistance? The issue of moisture with BILLY shelves is often underestimated. In addition to the points already mentioned by Trate47 and Nathanaelk, I would like to highlight a few important aspects.
Firstly, I recommend treating the underside and the back panel of the shelves separately with a waterproof sealant, as the back panel is often uncoated and moisture can penetrate from the wall side. For this purpose, waterproof wood oil or a specialized wood varnish can be used.
Secondly, if possible, avoid placing the shelves directly on the floor. A slight elevation using spacers or small feet can prevent moisture standing underneath from seeping into the panels.
At least for older BILLY shelves, IKEA also offered versions with veneered surfaces, which depending on the type of wood, can be more resistant to moisture compared to the standard models.
In conclusion: fully waterproof and moisture-resistant furniture is rare in the IKEA range; with BILLY in particular, you should always use additional measures if the installation location is prone to moisture.

My question is: Does anyone have practical experience with BILLY shelves that have been specially modified for humid rooms, for example through edge sealing and additional varnishing? How long does such a piece of furniture last under continuous exposure to moisture?
I am also interested in learning about alternatives that IKEA or other suppliers offer for shelving systems with better moisture resistance if BILLY is not robust enough.
