Telen5Good morning everyone, I have been planning for some time to install an Ikea PAX wardrobe system at my home because I really appreciate its flexibility and the option for individual customization. However, I am concerned about how to protect the wardrobe from wear and tear in the long term and how to best maintain the surfaces. I am especially interested in practical but also material-friendly methods to avoid scratches, stains, and general wear, since I know that PAX units often consist of engineered wood with laminate or foil surfaces that can be sensitive. Does anyone in the forum have experience or tips on how to take optimal care of a new PAX wardrobe to keep it looking like new for as long as possible? Advice on cleaning as well as protection against moisture or sunlight exposure would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!
Hello Telen5,
to effectively protect an Ikea PAX wardrobe from wear and tear and to make maintenance easier, you should consider the following points:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth with warm water and a mild dish soap. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or abrasive sponges, as these can damage the laminate surfaces.
- Scratch protection: Install soft pads or felt-backed protectors on frequently touched areas of doors or drawers. Regularly check and tighten screws to keep hinges and rollers in good condition.
- Avoid moisture: Although PAX is usually made with melamine-coated panels that are moisture-resistant, direct contact with water should be avoided. Humidity can indirectly affect wood-based materials.
- Sunlight exposure: UV rays can especially cause white or light-colored laminates to fade. Position the wardrobe away from windows where possible or use curtains/blinds.
- General handling: Avoid placing heavy or sharp-edged objects on shelves or doors to prevent dents or scratches.
I hope these tips help you! If you have questions about specific cleaning products, I can also provide recommendations.

Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive sponges, as these can damage the surface films.I can definitely confirm that! 😊 I once accidentally used a stronger cleaning product on my PAX – and instantly got a small dull spot. Since then, I always rely on simple dish soap and a soft cloth. Regular gentle wiping keeps the unit looking spotless.
Another tip: I occasionally apply a little silicone spray to the hinges and door tracks. This ensures quiet, smooth movement and prevents wear. Of course, avoid getting any oil drops on the surfaces to prevent stains!
And since bright cabinet surfaces were mentioned: a UV-protective window blind is worth installing. It helps maintain the bright appearance while still letting in plenty of light.
In short: clean gently, care for moving parts, and protect from sunlight – then your PAX will last a long time.
Hello Telen5,
Your question regarding the care and protection of an Ikea PAX wardrobe is very sensible, as the durability of furniture greatly depends on proper treatment. I would like to go into more detail about the construction and typical weak points, because only a systematic approach can effectively counteract wear and tear.
1. Material and surfaces:
The PAX system usually consists of wood-based panels coated with melamine resin (particleboard or MDF). These panels are somewhat moisture resistant, but the laminate surface is sensitive to scratches and abrasion. This means that even minor mechanical impacts can irreversibly damage the surface.
2. Cleaning:
- For regular cleaning, a soft cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a mild cleaning agent is sufficient. Important: always wipe immediately with a dry cloth to avoid water stains and swelling of the edges.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners, such as those containing chlorine or alcohol.
3. Protective measures against external factors:
- Using felt pads on the feet or contact points with the floor or other objects helps minimize scratches and makes moving the unit easier.
- Consider ventilation: to prevent humidity buildup and trapped moisture, the room should be well ventilated.
- UV protection from direct sunlight is essential. The laminate tends to yellow or fade with strong UV exposure.
4. Mechanical stress:
- Regularly check hinges and drawer runners and lubricate if necessary (silicone spray recommended, no oil).
- Avoid overloading drawers and doors to prevent strain on the fittings.
5. Long-term protection:
- Consider applying protective films or transparent covers on heavily used surfaces.
- For the interior, using liners or mats is recommended to trap dust and dirt.
Could you please specify if the PAX system will be placed in a living space with high humidity or direct sunlight? This information would help provide more targeted advice.

Could you possibly specify whether the PAX system will be placed in a living space with high humidity or direct sunlight exposure?Thank you very much for the detailed response and all the information. The PAX will be set up in my bedroom, which has a window facing mostly north, so direct sunlight only enters the room a little in the early morning hours during winter, and less so in summer. The humidity level is quite normal, not excessively high; I ventilate regularly.

I accidentally used a stronger cleaning agent on my PAX—boom, a small dull spot appeared. This certainly confirms the need for caution when cleaning; I actually didn’t want to experiment much myself because of the foil finish.

One more question: Does anyone have experience with special care products that can be used on PAX without damaging the foil? Or are mild household cleaners with water the best option?
