tar50Hello everyone, I am planning to install several Ikea Metod wall cabinets in my kitchen on a drywall (gypsum board) wall. The cabinets need to be securely and permanently mounted, as they will hold a significant amount of weight, especially when fully loaded with dishes and pantry items.
My question is: How can I safely mount Ikea Metod wall cabinets on drywall? Specifically, I’m interested in advice on choosing the right fastening materials, the best positioning for anchors and screws, whether special drywall anchors or heavy-duty anchors should be used, and how to assess if the wall can support the load overall.
I already have the Ikea mounting rails, but I assume these alone won’t be secure enough on a drywall wall without additional wooden support behind it. Your recommendations, experiences, or tips on proven methods would be very helpful. Thank you!

Specifically, I’m interested in advice on choosing the right anchors and screws, the best placement for dowels and screws, whether special toggle bolts or heavy-duty anchors should be used, and how to assess if the wall can support the overall load.Your question is well thought out and important, as safely mounting Metod wall cabinets on drywall indeed requires careful planning. In principle: drywall alone is not strong enough to support heavy furniture by itself. Therefore, there are two common solutions:
- Installing wooden battens (a mounting or counter battens) behind the drywall panels, to which you can directly screw the cabinets. This way, the load is distributed to the wall’s structural studs.
- If a wooden substructure is not possible, use special heavy-duty anchors designed for hollow walls, such as metal toggle bolts or chemical anchors. However, these must reliably support the total weight of your cabinets plus contents.
Regarding Ikea mounting rails: if installed without a solid backing, they usually will not hold sufficiently on drywall alone. It is crucial that the anchors align with the battens or metal studs in the wall, if present.
One more tip: use a stud finder to check whether wooden studs run behind the drywall, so you can at least screw into these points, which provides much greater stability.
If you like, I can also provide a list of suitable anchor types and installation guidelines. Careful planning is essential to ensure nothing falls and no one gets hurt. Feel free to share more details.

Heavy-duty anchors are sometimes overrated; for permanent loads, wooden substructures provide a more stable solution.

I once tried to attach Metod wall cabinets using only hollow wall anchors on drywall – that was not a good idea. Eventually, the cabinets came loose, luckily without any damage.
My recommendation: build a wooden subframe that you attach to the load-bearing wall. Then mount the cabinets onto this battens system.
Key points to consider:
- Use wooden battens that are wide enough to allow for enough screws
- The anchors you use to fix the wooden battens to the wall must be suitable for hollow walls (e.g., metal anchors with toggle mechanisms)
- Use a stud finder or gently tap the wall to locate the metal or wooden studs
- The metal or wooden studs provide the best support for the wood; otherwise, the anchors will only grip the drywall, which is not secure
If attaching a subframe is not possible, you should definitely use very high-quality heavy-duty anchors (for example, hollow wall metal anchors with a high load rating) – and even then, try to distribute the load by using wide mounting rails.
I know this is more effort, but it’s better than problems or accidents later on. Good luck with your project!
