I have a specific question regarding Billy shelves from Ikea. I have noticed that these shelves tend to sag in the middle of the shelves under heavy loads, even when the weight appears to be within the specified maximum load capacity. Since I plan to store books and other heavy items, I am looking for practical and long-lasting methods to prevent or at least significantly reduce sagging. Are there any recommendations for using additional reinforcements, alternative shelf boards, or other measures? I am also open to tips on how to set up and use the shelf to maintain its stability.

This is unfortunately a classic issue with Billy-style shelves! 😄 I personally often rely on simple tricks that work really well: for example, I place thin metal reinforcements or sturdy wooden strips underneath the shelves—as a kind of second support layer. This effectively takes the load and keeps the shelf from sagging. Even if it seems a bit makeshift at first, it greatly extends the shelf’s lifespan. Good luck and don’t worry, we’ll get this sorted! 🙂

I would like to provide a brief guide on how to reduce sagging in Billy-style shelves, based on the most common causes:

1. Check load distribution: Books or heavy items should be spread as evenly as possible across the shelf, not just placed in the center.

2. Ensure floor clearance: If possible, the shelving unit should stand on a level surface to avoid additional stress from sideways forces.

3. Reinforce the shelves: You can either use new shelves made from thicker material or strengthen the existing shelves with extra cross braces made of wood or metal. These can be screwed or glued to the underside.

4. Use support brackets: Small wooden or metal angle brackets attached to the back or sides of the shelving unit can effectively increase stability.

In summary: A combination of even load distribution and additional reinforcement measures is usually the best approach. If anyone has further tips or experiences, please share!

This is definitely the key point. I would add that the original shelves from Billy* are often only about 16 mm (0.6 inches) thick and made of particleboard, which tends to bend under heavy load. A practical solution would be to have shelves made from plywood or MDF at least 18–22 mm (0.7–0.9 inches) thick, cut to the same dimensions, and simply place them on top. This significantly and permanently increases stability.

Additionally, I recommend securing the shelves as much as possible between two side panels of the unit to prevent sideways bending. It is also important to check whether all supplied dowels and screws are properly seated—loose connections can cause unwanted movement and faster sagging.

Let's be honest, constantly reinforcing Billy bookcases seems to me like a symptom of a bigger issue: Ikea often chooses the easiest option when it comes to materials in these flat-pack furniture lines. Sure, reinforcements help, but why not just opt for a sturdier piece of furniture if you need to store heavy loads? My advice is this: if you take weight capacity and durability seriously, go straight for more robust shelving systems. It may cost a bit more, but in the long run, it saves a lot of frustration :-)

That’s an important point you bring up. However, not everyone has the space or budget for a larger investment. I can fully understand how frustrating it is when a shelf starts to sag after a short time. The additional reinforcements for Billy shelves can be a good temporary solution and buy some time until a better alternative is found.

What helped me recently: I reorganized the books, placing heavy reference books at the bottom and lighter books on top. Small reorganizations often have more impact than you might think. 🙂
