ᐅ How can I prevent Billy bookcases from sagging under load?

I have a specific question regarding Billy shelves from Ikea. I have noticed that these shelves tend to sag in the middle of the shelves under heavy loads, even when the weight appears to be within the specified maximum load capacity. Since I plan to store books and other heavy items, I am looking for practical and long-lasting methods to prevent or at least significantly reduce sagging. Are there any recommendations for using additional reinforcements, alternative shelf boards, or other measures? I am also open to tips on how to set up and use the shelf to maintain its stability.

Small reorganizations often make more of a difference than you might expect. 🙂

That's true! And while we're at it, I also experimented with those small double shelf supports available as accessories. They sit under the shelf board and are almost invisible. I installed them under the heavy middle section of the shelf – the effect is incredible!

Sometimes it’s the little helpers that solve a big problem. And don’t worry, the shelf remains completely unchanged visually 🙂

Hey everyone! 🙂 I just wanted to say that I’m really happy with the tips here! Strengthening the sides with metal brackets made a huge difference for me! I used to just lean the shelf against the wall, but after reinforcing it, the shelf is much more stable – and the shelves don’t sag anymore.

Not having to constantly rearrange the shelf is just fantastic! So give it a try – it’s definitely worth it! :-)

In short: Insert additional shelves in the middle or attach metal brackets on the sides. Make sure the load is evenly distributed. Done.

Absolutely brilliant! I’ve had great experiences with them as well. Here’s a little tip from me: Sometimes it makes sense to attach a thin wood panel or particle board to the back of the shelf frame. This increases overall stability, prevents warping, and gives the shelf a solid hold. It requires little effort but has a nice effect.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful and varied tips! To summarize, these are the options I see for action:

- Replace shelves with stronger materials or install additional cross braces
- Use metal brackets and small support blocks for stabilization
- Distribute loads more evenly and store heavy items lower down
- Reinforce the back panel if needed

I find the advice about double supports particularly interesting, as it can be easily integrated into existing shelves.

I will experiment with several solutions and report back on how they affect stability. If anyone has any other innovative ideas, I’m open to them!
