Hello everyone,
I’m planning to assemble several Billy bookcases from IKEA soon and want to prepare as best as possible. I have a question: What tools or aids would you recommend to make assembling the Billy bookcases easier and more efficient?
I’m especially interested in useful hand tools, practical tips during assembly, and possibly any special accessories that make the process safer or faster.
I already have a cordless drill and a hammer, but what other tools or aids are actually helpful?
Thanks for your experiences and advice!

What tools or aids would you recommend to make assembling the BILLY shelves easier and more efficient? To optimize the assembly process, I recommend the following tools:
1. Cordless drill with adjustable torque setting – reduces physical effort and ensures even tightening.
2. Rubber mallet – prevents damage when tapping in dowels.
3. Carpenter’s square or small metal square – to align the shelves precisely at right angles.
4. Folding ruler or tape measure – for quick distance checks.
It is also helpful to prepare all screws and small parts in labeled bowls or small containers for better organization and to avoid mix-ups.

Additionally, I recommend using a spirit level to make sure the shelf is straight when installed.
Furthermore, a set of Allen keys (hex keys) can be helpful in case the furniture requires extra screws that are not easily accessible with the included tools.
I completely understand that building can sometimes be stressful, especially if you don’t have all the tools ready.
A tip from me: If you don’t have any helpers, place the parts on a non-slip mat or carpet. This prevents scratches and makes assembly easier because the parts are less likely to slip.
And don’t hesitate to take breaks if things get difficult – it helps keep your mood up 🙂
