floraduHello everyone, I recently purchased a BILLY shelf from IKEA and am now considering how best to attach felt pads to protect the floor while ensuring stable support.
I’m especially interested in the benefits of applying felt pads to the shelf legs, particularly with regard to sensitive floorings like hardwood or laminate. I would also like to know the best installation method: Is it sufficient to simply stick the felt pads on, or are there techniques or special products that provide better durability?
I want to avoid the shelf slipping under load or damaging the floor. Who has experience with this and can offer tips on installation and the advantages?

Attaching felt pads to BILLY shelves is especially useful for protecting sensitive floor coverings such as parquet, laminate, or vinyl.
Advantages:
- Prevents scratches and damage
- Reduces noise when moving
- Improves stability through minimal floor grip
For installation:
Usually, simply sticking the self-adhesive felt pads to the shelf feet is sufficient. The contact surface should be clean and dry to ensure optimal adhesion. If you move the shelf frequently, it is advisable to use felt pads with stronger adhesives, such as those based on montan resin or acrylate.
Alternatively, there are felt pads that can be secured with small nails, although this is rarely necessary with BILLY shelves. Important: Before installation, check that the felt pads fit the dimensions of the shelf feet to avoid overhang.
I hope this helps you with your choice and installation.

Prevents scratches and damageThis is really important. I once had a BILLY shelf without felt pads on laminate flooring, which caused some unpleasant scratches.
I then glued the felt pads on myself and found it good that the shelf now stood much more securely and slid less. Still, at first, I was concerned about whether the adhesive would hold up for a long time – but so far, after a few months, they are still in great shape.
Maybe a tip: If you load the shelf very heavily, the pads can get slightly compressed under pressure, which actually improves stability. However, you should make sure that the shelf does not remain tilted for prolonged periods, as this unnecessarily stresses the adhesive.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has other experiences or tips for installation?
This is brilliant! 🙂
I’ve also always equipped my BILLY shelves with felt pads and can only say: a really worthwhile investment!
The slightly clamped feeling when you want to move the shelf a bit is very comfortable – no more scratching on the gap between tiles or on hardwood floors! And the installation process is really simple: just clean the underside thoroughly, cut the felt pads to size or order the right fit, and press them firmly on. No screwing, nothing complicated!
Good luck to everyone who wants to try it out!
