Hello everyone,

I recently bought an Ikea PAX wardrobe with mirrored doors and plan to securely attach the mirrors to the doors. My main concern is that the mirrors won’t wobble or come loose when opening and closing the doors, as they are quite large and heavy.

The included mounting materials seem more suitable for light panels or thin glass surfaces. I want to avoid damaging the mirror or compromising the door due to improper installation.

Has anyone had experience with safely and permanently fixing the Ikea PAX mirrors to the doors? Are there any special techniques or additional materials you would recommend?

It would be great if you could share details about the steps, recommended tools, and possible pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

Hello PAUJA,

To securely attach your PAX mirrored doors, it is important first to determine the type of door material you have (wood, particleboard) and the type of mirror you want to install. The supplied clips are often not designed to bear the full weight of a large mirror but serve mainly for positioning, so you should use additional securing methods.

Here is my detailed procedure:

- Step 1: Preparation
- Remove the door and place it on a stable surface
- Thoroughly clean the back of the mirrored door to remove dust and grease

- Step 2: Mirror attachment
- I recommend using mirror adhesive tape with a special glue suitable for glass on wood or plastic. These products have a high load capacity.
- Alternatively or additionally, small mounting rails or metal brackets can be attached to the door to physically support the mirror.

- Step 3: Mirror installation
- Carefully position the mirror onto the adhesive surface and press firmly.
- Secure with clamps and allow to cure for at least 24 hours.

- Step 4: Rehang the door and test its function

An important note: If your doors have frames, screwing small support brackets into the frame is a very secure method that avoids damaging the mirror.

I would be interested to know how exactly your doors are constructed – do you have solid frames or a single continuous door panel? This way I can offer more specific advice.

Hi PAUJA!

It’s great that you’re thinking this through before installing the mirrors! 🙂 With Ikea PAX doors, this is really important because a loose mirror is not only annoying but also dangerous.

Here’s what I did back then:
- Applied mirror adhesive tape all around
- Additionally, fixed small aluminum brackets on the inside of the door

This holds really well and provides extra safety. Important: Be patient and let the adhesive cure properly. It’s worth it! Good luck, it’s going to look great!

Hello PAUJA,

I would like to provide you with a clear guide on how to securely attach Ikea PAX mirrors to your doors, so you are well prepared.

1. Preparation
- Remove the door from the wardrobe and place it on a flat, soft surface.
- Clean the adhesive areas (back of the door and back of the mirror) with alcohol to ensure a grease-free surface.

2. Choosing the right fastening materials
- Ikea usually supplies only thin mounting materials, which may not always hold.
- It is recommended to use special mirror adhesive tapes or silicone adhesive suitable for glass.
- You can also use metal corner brackets or small retaining clips if you prefer not to use permanent adhesives.

3. Installation
- Apply adhesive tape or glue evenly to the back of the mirror or the door.
- Position the mirror with gentle pressure.
- Secure carefully (e.g., with clamps or weights) and allow to cure for 24 hours.

4. Inspection
- After the curing time, carefully rehang the door.
- Check the fit of the mirror, gently wobble it, and see if the adhesive or fastenings loosen.

Common mistakes:
- Gluing the mirror directly onto a dusty or greasy surface
- Using too little adhesive or adhesive tape
- Not securing during curing

I hope these steps help you!

Thanks for the tips so far, they’re really helpful!

Gafiel, the doors are quite simple in construction—MDF board with a white foil covering, no particularly sturdy frames. So attaching metal brackets on the front would be difficult, as it would spoil the appearance. The mirrors on the doors measure about 180cm by 50cm (71 inches by 20 inches), so they are fairly large.

Does anyone have experience with using pure adhesive or mirror tape for such large surfaces on MDF? How reliable is it in terms of load-bearing capacity, or are there recommended maximum sizes?

And what about temperature fluctuations, for example from heated air—is the adhesive reliable under those conditions?

Hello PAUJA,

With such a large mirror size on an MDF door, proper preparation is indeed essential. Mirror adhesive tape can hold very well if it is specifically designed for this purpose. Important points:

- Use double-sided mirror adhesive tape with high load capacity – not just simple double-sided tape.
- Make sure to apply adhesive strips at least every 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) to distribute the weight evenly.
- Avoid placing the doors directly in front of strong heat sources, as large temperature fluctuations can reduce the adhesive strength.

If you’re unsure, a combination of mirror adhesive tape and clear mounting silicone can help, as the silicone can be easily repaired if the mirror ever needs to be removed.

Take your time when molding the silicone to avoid trapping air. This will increase durability.
