Good morning everyone, I am currently planning some minor repair work on my IKEA Billy bookcases, mainly tasks like tightening screws, possibly small surface touch-ups, and realignment. I want to make sure the surface of the shelves isn’t damaged by tools, screwdrivers, or adhesives during these repairs. I am interested in which methods and materials you would recommend to best protect the surface of the Billy bookcases during this kind of maintenance. Are there proven protective measures, such as special films, covers, or similar aids that are easy to use and preserve the appearance? Thanks for your tips!

It's best to use furniture pads or felt glides to cushion rough tools. Painter's tape also helps protect sensitive areas from adhesive or paint.

Hello eli40, to protect the BILLY shelf surface during repairs, I recommend first covering the area with masking tape, which is soft and does not leave any residue. Additionally, you can place soft cloths under the tools if you need to work on the surface. If you are handling glue or liquids, they should be removed quickly to prevent them from penetrating the melamine coating. If you are willing to put in a bit more effort, a transparent protective film, such as one made of PVC, can also provide long-term protection.

Painter’s tape sounds good, but I find it can easily stick to the surface and peel off small parts of paint or foil when removed. Especially with older BILLY shelves, I would recommend using a thin cloth or felt instead. I can imagine that using tape may not be worth the effort in the long run.

I always use a simple solution for cases like this: self-adhesive felt pads, the kind used under furniture, work perfectly. You can cut them to size and place them under your tools. The surface stays clean and undamaged.

Thanks, that sounds interesting. Do you have a specific film in mind that works well for BILLY shelves? Are there any experiences regarding how it behaves when removed? Does the surface stay undamaged, or are there adhesive residues left behind? I would like to avoid any permanent marks as much as possible.
