Hello everyone, I am planning to modify an Ikea Metod kitchen to make it safe and as child-friendly as possible for toddlers. My main questions are: What measures can be taken to secure the furniture units against tipping over? How can sharp edges or corners be best cushioned or altered? Are there proven additional solutions, such as special locks or magnetic catches, that can be easily integrated without significantly affecting the kitchen’s appearance? I would be very grateful for concrete tips or experiences on how to adapt Metod kitchen furniture to be child-safe without greatly limiting functionality and design.

Tip-overs prevention is mandatory. Be sure to use wall fasteners from the Ikea range. Foam edge protectors are available, which are easy to attach with adhesive. Magnetic child safety locks can be installed on the inside and are almost invisible.

Hello, I can fully understand that; safety for children in the kitchen is very important. Regarding your concern: the anti-tip device for Metod cabinets works very well if you mount the included brackets to the wall and additionally secure the furniture with screws. For the edges, it helps to cover the corners with soft plastic edge protectors, which are safe and barely noticeable visually. I also recommend choosing drawers with soft-close dampers, as this makes closing quieter and prevents small fingers from getting pinched. Magnetic catches are a practical solution—as long as they remain easy for adults to operate. Overall, the rule is to keep things simple and check what the children can still reach.

A child-friendly and safe modification of Ikea Metod kitchen units can be achieved in three steps:

- Fixing: Use the supplied safety brackets to secure the units to the wall. Additionally, metal straps can be installed behind the furniture as anti-tip protection.
- Edges: Choose self-adhesive edge protectors made of foam or plastic. Ensure they are durable and sturdy, as they are often subjected to stress.
- Safety locks: Magnetic child locks are especially recommended for cabinets containing cleaning products or knife drawers. It is important that these are well hidden and easy to operate.

Common mistakes include insufficient securing of the units and overlooking lower drawers that children can easily reach. Please check that all screws are properly tightened and regularly inspect the locks for functionality.

These are good construction measures, but it might also be worth reconsidering the fundamental question: Isn’t it primarily an educational task to explain the dangers in the kitchen to children? Safe remodeling is important, but it does not replace supervision. Additionally, I wonder if magnetic locks are always the best solution, as they can make accessing cabinets more cumbersome. Perhaps a combination of physical modifications and behavioral rules is more effective.

I fully understand the desire for safety and would also like to emphasize the aspect of support for parents. Especially with Metod kitchens, I believe a pragmatic approach works best: adding hobby safety measures, childproofing the cabinets, but also accepting that complete accident prevention can never be guaranteed. It is important to give children responsibility in order to build trust. Soft foam corner protectors and soft-close drawers immediately create a more relaxed feeling. The magnetic locks that harold mentions are, in my opinion, a good compromise between safety and usability.
