Hello everyone, I am planning to modify an Ikea Metod kitchen to make it safe and as child-friendly as possible for toddlers. My main questions are: What measures can be taken to secure the furniture units against tipping over? How can sharp edges or corners be best cushioned or altered? Are there proven additional solutions, such as special locks or magnetic catches, that can be easily integrated without significantly affecting the kitchen’s appearance? I would be very grateful for concrete tips or experiences on how to adapt Metod kitchen furniture to be child-safe without greatly limiting functionality and design.

The magnetic locks Harold is referring to are, in my opinion, a good compromise between security and ease of use.

Exactly, they work perfectly for me. The only important thing is that the magnet is not too strong; otherwise, opening the lock becomes too difficult.

For my Metod kitchen, I only used child safety locks for cabinets containing hazardous items like cleaning products. For tipping protection, I used the Ikea wall mounting bracket. I didn’t treat the edges separately – our kids don’t spend much time alone in the kitchen. However, I would advise against not installing it if small children are often in the kitchen.
