Tatan40Dear community,
I recently cleaned a KALLAX shelf with a microfiber cloth, but I noticed that the original shine of the material has significantly faded. It now looks rather matte and somewhat dull, which I did not expect. I generally do not use any harsh cleaning agents, just a damp microfiber cloth without any added substances.
My question is: Has anyone experienced the issue that the KALLAX shelf loses its shine after cleaning with a microfiber cloth? If so, are there any practical tips or proven methods to restore the shine or at least minimize the loss? I would prefer not to use aggressive care products, as I don’t want to damage the material.
Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions!

It is quite common that microfiber cloths—especially when used only damp and without any treatment products—can dull the shine of surfaces like those on the KALLAX shelf, as they often remove the fine protective layer.
Here are a few tips on how to restore the shine:
1. Gentle care oils or furniture polish: Use care oils or polishes specifically designed for wood or laminate surfaces that refresh the shine without containing harsh chemicals. Always test first on an inconspicuous area.
2. Proper use of microfiber cloths: Very wet cloths can damage the finish. It’s best to use them only slightly damp and wipe in one direction, never in circular motions.
3. Regular cleaning and maintenance: To maintain the shine over time, regularly clean the KALLAX and then seal it with a suitable care product.
4. Avoid alcohol or strong chemicals: These dry out surfaces and cause a matte appearance.
Summary: Simply wiping with a damp microfiber cloth can impair the shine because it often scratches or removes the natural protective film. Follow-up treatment with a mild furniture polish can help restore it.
Hope this helps you! 🙂

I once had the same issue with my KALLAX – after cleaning, everything looked quite dull, almost “flat.” Since then, I always use a separate, slightly damp cloth and then apply a small amount of furniture polish with a soft cloth. Result? The shine comes back and the shelf stays looking great! 🙂
Oh, and very important: don’t use too much liquid, or it will make things worse. You don’t want a water damage situation 😉
In short: Damp is fine, wet is harmful. And a little care makes all the difference. Good luck!

Does anyone know the issue where the KALLAX shelf loses its shine after cleaning with a microfiber cloth?I’m familiar with that. Just try treating it afterward with furniture polish or a care oil. Use only a small amount, apply it, and then gently buff it. This quickly restores the shine.
If you use the microfiber cloth damp, don’t make it too wet, or the surface may be damaged.
