ᐅ Troubleshooting: How to Quickly and Easily Adjust Doors on a Kallax Unit?

radan9Hello everyone,
I have doors on my Kallax shelving unit that have warped slightly after some use or no longer close properly. I want to adjust the doors as simply and quickly as possible, without having to take the entire unit apart or use complicated tools.
Specifically, I’m interested in what adjustment options the hinges offer and how to best proceed to correctly make lateral and gap adjustments.
Are there any tips or a step-by-step guide for the most common issues?
Looking forward to your advice and experiences!

The Kallax doors have adjustable hinges, usually with three adjustment screws: height, depth, and lateral alignment.
You can easily adjust the screws with a Phillips screwdriver to realign the door. Generally, turning the screws in small increments and periodically checking the closing function is sufficient.

I am specifically interested in which adjustment options the hinges offer and the best way to proceed, especially to correctly adjust the side gap and spacing. In the case of the Kallax shelving unit, standard 35mm (1.4 inch) cup hinges are used, which can be adjusted along three axes:
1. Lateral adjustment (horizontal) – regulates the gap between the frame and the door to adjust the side clearance.
2. Height adjustment – changes whether the door is positioned slightly up or down, usually controlled by two screws on the hinge.
3. Depth adjustment – controls how far the door protrudes from the frame to allow for flush closing.
Procedure:
- First, gently turn the lateral adjustment screw if the door is too far inside or sticking out of the cabinet.
- Then perform the height adjustment to ensure the door closes evenly at the same level.
- Finally, check the depth adjustment to make sure the door closes smoothly without binding.
It is important to make changes in small steps and to open and close the door several times after each adjustment. This way, you can quickly tell if the alignment is correct. The only tool you need is a Phillips screwdriver.

Procedure: - First, carefully loosen the side screw if the door is set too far into or out of the cabinet.Additionally, it should be noted that the side adjustment is the most important when correcting Z-gaps. Ideally, this is adjusted so that the door and the cabinet have even gaps.
Also, care should be taken not to loosen the hinges too much during fine-tuning to maintain a stable position.
A common mistake is to turn all screws at once immediately. A better approach is a systematic one, adjusting each screw individually to properly align the doors.
Adjusting usually works for me, but at first I often turned the screws too much, and then the doors somehow don’t close properly anymore.
This tip helped me a lot; you really have to be patient. Even if it’s frustrating, it’s better to keep checking repeatedly before turning too much.
The feeling that the door is sticking or misaligned is annoying and you want to finish quickly – but taking your time works much better 🙂

Additionally, I would like to point out two technical details that are often overlooked:
1. Screw type: Kallax typically uses standard cup hinges with a tightening mechanism. The adjustment options are mechanically limited, which means that if the door is already severely warped, replacement is the only solution.
2. Checking the hinges: When readjusting, make sure that all hinges are securely attached to the cabinet. Loose fittings cause permanent warping.
My tip: If the door constantly needs readjustment, check whether wood swelling due to moisture is a factor. In such cases, only a dry climate or material replacement can help.
