ᐅ What should I do if the shelves for a Billy bookcase don’t fit properly?

narsuHello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA but noticed that the shelves don’t seem to fit properly. The slots on the sides are there, but the shelves either fit too tightly or sit loosely, causing them to hang unevenly. I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong during assembly or if Billy bookshelves have different shelves for certain versions that need to be considered? Are there any tips on how to properly install or adjust the shelves so they stay stable and level? I would appreciate any specific advice or shared experiences!
Hey narsu, it’s great that you brought up this topic here! 🙂 I had the same issue before where the shelves of the Billy bookcase didn’t quite fit as I wanted. Often, it’s because the small plastic shelf supports aren’t properly seated in the indentations on the side panels – just take them out and put them back in again; sometimes they simply slip out of place. It also helps to slightly twist the shelves when inserting them, not just push them in but use a bit of a turning motion so everything clicks perfectly into place. Then the shelf holds really securely! Good luck, you can do it! 🙂
To solve the issue of shelf panels not fitting properly in Billy shelves, I recommend the following approach: First, check whether the shelves are marked and if they correspond to the correct shelf height. IKEA sometimes uses different drilling patterns and insertion positions for various Billy models or series. Also, make sure that the plastic shelf supports (support pins) are installed correctly—they should neither be inserted too deeply nor sit too loosely in the holes. If the supports do not fit, replacement parts can be obtained from IKEA. It is also important to verify that the shelf unit itself is standing level and is not warped, as this can make fitting the shelves more difficult.

Often the problem is that the small plastic supports are not properly seated in the recess of the side panel Thanks for the tip! Could you perhaps describe in more detail what these supports look like and how they should be correctly positioned? Are they usually fixed to the shelf or are they separate plug-in parts? And how can I tell if I have the wrong supports?

The plastic supports used in Billy bookcases are small plastic pins that fit into designated holes on the side panels. They are not fixed in place but are inserted to hold the shelves.
It is important that these supports sit perfectly straight and flush in the holes. If they are crooked or not fully inserted, the shelf can easily slip or tilt. Additionally, all four supports (two per side) should be positioned at exactly the same height.
To differentiate between different types of shelves: check the underside of the shelf or the unit for any engraving or marking. IKEA produces various versions of the Billy bookcase, such as those with glass shelves or reinforced boards. Mixing them up can affect how securely the shelf fits.

Timmyse3610 Jun 2021 13:09Hello narsu, I completely understand how frustrating it must be when the shelves don’t fit – that can really ruin the assembly process. I also had a case where the Billy shelf warped because I screwed it to the wall too quickly. After that, it was almost impossible to insert the shelves. What helped me was fully balancing the unit before putting in the shelves—loosening all the screws slightly and aligning everything properly first. Only then did I insert the shelves and finally tighten the screws again. Maybe this sequence will help you too? Hang in there, you’ve got this!
