Hello everyone, I recently installed the IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet doors, but some of the doors do not close flush, resulting in uneven gaps when shut. I understand these doors are fitted with 3D hinges that allow adjustment in height, depth, and sideways. However, I haven’t been able to get all the doors to close evenly and flush. Is there a systematic way to precisely adjust the Metod doors, particularly to achieve uniform gaps and a flush finish? I would appreciate any advice on the adjustment screws, effective steps to take, or common mistakes to avoid.

The adjustment of IKEA Metod doors is done via three settings on the hinge: height, depth, and lateral position. It is important to first adjust the height to ensure the doors are aligned on the same level. Next, adjust the depth to make the doors flush with the cabinet frame. Finally, adjust the lateral position to optimize the spacing between the doors. A common mistake is overcorrecting during the lateral adjustment, which can cause misalignment. It is recommended to perform the adjustments carefully and gradually using a small screwdriver until an even gap is visible.

You should start with the height adjustment, which is the top screw on the hinge. This will align the door vertically. Then, adjust the screw for the depth, usually located closer to the hinge casing on the inside. Finally, adjust the lateral position so that the doors close neatly side by side.

Thank you for the quick reply. To clarify a bit further: the height adjustment is on the screw above the hinge mechanism, correct? Would I basically need to level each door with a spirit level before adjusting the depth and lateral alignment? I’m asking because, for example, I have a corner where the doors close properly, but on the other side the gaps are too large. Could this also be due to uneven installation dimensions of the cabinet carcasses?

For adjusting IKEA Metod cabinet doors, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, make sure the kitchen carcasses are installed perfectly plumb and in the correct position. Uneven or tilted carcasses can make adjustment more difficult.
- Use the height adjustment (usually a screw above the hinge) to align the door with the top and bottom edges of the adjacent doors.
- The depth adjustment regulates the gap between the door and the carcass so that the door sits flush and does not protrude or sit too far inside.
- The side adjustment screw moves the door horizontally to create an even gap between neighboring doors.

Common mistakes include over-adjusting one screw without correcting the other directions or neglecting to align the basic position of the carcasses. Always proceed step by step and check the gaps with a ruler or by eye after each adjustment.

Additionally, make sure the hinges are mounted correctly and are not crooked, as this can make adjustment more difficult.

Exactly. If the cabinets are not properly positioned, even the best screw adjustments won’t help. That’s why you should first check the cabinets themselves, then slowly adjust the doors.
