SenerdanHello everyone,
I am about to move again and realized that I need to transport some Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets. Since these cabinets are modular and often made from relatively thin panels, I am concerned about how to package and transport them safely without causing any damage.
Of course, I want to protect the doors and fronts, as they are usually quite delicate. I’m also a bit worried about the fasteners because I fear that screws or hinges might loosen or bend if the cabinets are not transported properly.
Do you have any experience or specific tips for moving Ikea Metod cabinets during a relocation? Should they be fully disassembled or left assembled? What kind of padding or cushioning works best? How do you transport the cabinets in a truck or van to avoid damage?
I look forward to your advice and suggestions!

Do you have any experience or specific tips for transporting Ikea Metod cabinets during a move? Should they be completely disassembled or kept assembled? From a technical perspective, it is safest to fully disassemble Ikea Metod cabinets before transport. This prevents mechanical stress on the joints and hinges during the move.
- Remove doors and fronts separately and pack them well with foam padding or thick blankets to avoid damage.
- Collect screws, dowels, and other small parts in labeled bags to ease reassembly.
- Transport the cabinet frames (corpus) lying flat, and place padding between individual cabinet units.
- Avoid stacking, unless you have enough soft separating layers.
Taken together, this approach significantly reduces the risk of warping or scratches.

From a technical perspective, it is safest to fully disassemble Ikea Metod cabinets before transport.I agree with this and would like to explain in more detail how to proceed:
1. Always remove doors and drawers, as they can loosen during movement or even come off their tracks.
2. Also remove the shelves. The thin Metod shelves are particularly prone to breaking if they are not well cushioned.
3. Wrap all removed parts with bubble wrap or at least thick blankets; especially the glossy fronts are sensitive to scratches caused by friction.
4. Do not partially screw cabinets together – either fully disassemble them or transport them fully assembled but securely protected.
When loading into the transporter, the following has proven effective:
- Store cabinets lying flat on a level surface, never upright without securing.
- Use non-slip mats, cable ties, or ratchet straps to fasten and secure everything firmly.
- Place cushioning materials such as foam or blankets between different cabinet components to absorb shocks.
One more question for you: How much experience do you have with furniture assembly? If needed, I can also provide a structured step-by-step assembly guide to make disassembly and reassembly easier.

Which padding methods have proven effective?Hey, I think when moving, it’s best to approach this usually dry and precise task with a bit of calm – but seriously: for Ikea Metod, thick moving blankets or bubble wrap definitely help! 🛋️
I always pack the doors individually, preferably with stretch wrap and then another thick blanket over them. This way, they don’t rub against each other and avoid scratches. As for cabinets, when disassembled, I stack them neatly side by side with old towels or blankets in between.
For transport in the vehicle, I recommend placing the heavy carcasses on the floor and everything lighter on top! Make sure to secure everything properly so nothing shifts – ratchet straps are invaluable. 🚚
And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, just stay calm and take it step by step – that helps much more than rushing through everything.

One more question for you: How much experience do you have with furniture assembly?Thank you for the detailed advice, deoke. I find your thoroughness very helpful. So far, I have assembled and disassembled several pieces of furniture myself, including some from Ikea, but I have usually avoided taking on an entire kitchen. Therefore, I am basically willing to take the cabinets completely apart, but I definitely want to avoid spending too much time or making mistakes when reassembling them in the new home.
Can you share any tips on how to properly handle the Metod cabinets during reassembly? What should I pay particular attention to so that everything fits securely and tightly?
Also, I wanted to ask: Are there any special tips for securing the hinges and fittings before transport to prevent loss or damage? Does anyone have any proven methods for this?
