ᐅ After painting, old doors no longer fit the new KALLAX unit – has anyone experienced this?

ARJUNHello everyone,
I’m currently facing an issue that’s been bothering me: I have an older KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and wanted to refresh it by painting the doors and then reattaching them. The problem is that the painted old doors no longer fit properly on the new KALLAX module – the doors either don’t hang correctly or don’t close flush anymore.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m wondering if the paint layer might have changed the spacing or hanging dimensions, or if it could be due to slight design changes in the new KALLAX series. Could there also be mechanical tolerances that are worsened by repainting?
I’d really like to know how to reliably solve this problem without having to switch to completely new doors.
Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

I wonder if it’s due to the paint layer, which might be altering the clearance or hanging dimensionsThat is usually the main cause. The paint layer, which can be several hundred micrometers thick, may prevent the doors from fitting properly into the hinges. With KALLAX doors, the tolerances are often tight, especially for the concealed hanging fittings.

if it might be due to a slightly changed module design in the new KALLAX seriesThat is rather unlikely, as the module dimensions have remained consistent for several years. Hanging issues are almost always caused by increased door thickness or warping due to moisture during painting.
My advice: If you plan to repaint the doors, apply little to no coating on the edges before painting and ideally use only very thin paint layers. Alternatively, you can carefully sand the hanging areas to restore proper fit.

A tip: Always remove the hinges before painting.

IKEA has made several minor changes recently, even though the basic dimensions stay the same. Especially with newer KALLAX modules, some hinges have been modified, which can lead to variations in the hanging height.
Another point: Repainted doors can easily warp due to moisture (even if the paint feels dry), which also causes fitting issues.
Has anyone checked this with precise measurements? I would be interested in specific numbers to provide more accurate assistance.
I can understand how frustrating such a problem is—especially when you put a lot of effort into painting and then the doors no longer fit. I had a similar issue, and in my case, it was actually due to the paint layer being too thick.
That matches my experience as well. After painting, I let the doors dry at room temperature for about 3 weeks, and then they fit better again.
If you have the option, I would recommend carefully checking the measurements and alignment after painting, and maybe lightly sanding them. But be careful not to damage the paint again.
Patience is also important here because furniture parts need time to stabilize after exposure to moisture. I hope this helps—please keep us updated!
