Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a few Billy shelves from IKEA and want to protect them as well as possible from dust and dirt. Since they are open and I use the shelves for books and decorations, it’s important to find a solution that isn’t complicated and doesn’t make access difficult.

I’m especially interested in practical and affordable options to keep both the surfaces and the interior of the Billy shelves clean. Are there special covers, protective films, or other tools that work well? Tips for regular cleaning or preventative measures against dirt would also be very helpful.

I’m looking forward to your ideas and recommendations!

Hello SERIRI,

first, a few basic tips to protect your Billy shelves from dust and dirt:

1. Regular wiping: Dust settles quickly on smooth surfaces. A microfiber cloth is recommended, as it effectively traps dust without causing scratches.

2. Glass or acrylic doors: A very effective method is to retrofit doors made of glass or acrylic. IKEA itself offers suitable doors for Billy shelves that are relatively inexpensive and significantly improve dust protection without greatly affecting the appearance.

3. Protective films: Special protective films for furniture can provide additional surface protection against dirt, but they are more suitable for scratches and stains and not optimal against dust inside the shelves.

4. Shelf covers: You can close shelf compartments with decorative boxes or plastic containers that are dustproof while also creating storage space.

5. Positioning: Place your shelves away from windows or doors where they catch more dust, and avoid high-traffic areas.

Summary: In my opinion, the most effective combination is retrofitting doors for dust protection along with regular wiping using microfiber cloths. Boxes inside the shelves can offer additional protection.

If you want, I can also go into more detail about installing the doors.

A simple and cost-effective solution is to have clear plexiglass cut to size and attach it to the shelves using Velcro or magnets. This way, you can access your items anytime while keeping dust out.

This is indeed a clever alternative if you don’t want to install the IKEA doors or find the effort too great. Plexiglass is quite lightweight and can be fitted with self-adhesive magnetic strips, which makes installation and later cleaning easier.

It is important to sand the edges well to prevent injuries and to wipe them regularly. A frame made of wooden slats can also help stabilize the attachment.

This option offers flexibility since the panels can be quickly removed when needed, for example for cleaning out or rearranging. Additionally, it is cost-effective and visually discreet, which is especially advantageous in an open-plan design.

I also recommend vacuuming the shelves from time to time, preferably using a soft brush nozzle to avoid damaging the surface.

If you have any questions about implementation, I am happy to help.
