Pima57Hello everyone,
I am considering getting an IKEA PAX wardrobe, but since we have a small child at home, safety and child-friendly handling are my top priorities. Do any of you have experience or recommendations on which versions of the PAX system are particularly suitable for families with children?
I am especially thinking about aspects such as: sturdy construction, child-safe door mechanisms, potential hazards (e.g., tipping, sharp edges), and whether certain dimensions or features (sliding door vs. hinged door, handles, interior layout) should be avoided or preferred. Tips on securing the wardrobe to the wall or recommended accessories would also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

The more secure option is the one with hinged doors, as they are easier to lock. It is important to always fix the cabinet to the wall, regardless of the type. Sliding doors are only recommended if there is a risk of small fingers getting trapped. Otherwise, pay attention to child-safe handles and interior fittings.
Hello Pima57,
your question about child-friendly IKEA PAX options is very well considered! Safety for furniture in a children’s room should never be underestimated.
As already mentioned, it is crucial to securely anchor the wardrobe to the wall to completely prevent tipping hazards. For the doors, hinged doors are often easier to secure than sliding doors, as the latter can pose a risk of pinching. If you prefer sliding doors, it’s best to choose versions with soft-close features and check whether finger traps can be mechanically eliminated.
The height of the wardrobe should be chosen so that there is no temptation for children to climb on the shelves, which can lead to accidents. Inside, I recommend clear, well-organized layouts with shelves at child height. Handles without sharp edges are better — children tend to grab everything.
One tip: IKEA offers suitable wall fixings and TÜV-tested safety devices that you should use. If you have more questions about the exact PAX variants, I’m happy to provide more details about dimensions and door types!

I simply wouldn’t leave the house without it if children are around. With PAX, the flexibility is a real advantage—you can organize the interior so nicely that the little ones have enough order and cannot reach dangerous items.
And hey, sliding doors look cool, but if fingers get caught underneath, the fun quickly ends. Better stick with the classic hinged doors or even open shelves with nice baskets—these carry much less risk, and kids can see and understand everything more easily.
A little more charming than just a "safe fortress"—that way PAX becomes a playground full of fun and safety!

The more secure option is the one with hinged doors, as they are easier to lock.I agree with this assessment. Additionally, I would like to point out the width and depth of the PAX system components:
- A 50 cm (20 inches) wide wardrobe offers more stability than narrower models.
- The depth of 58 cm (23 inches) is standard and practical, but keep in mind that furniture that is too deep can make it harder to keep an overview.
Furthermore, I recommend choosing interior fittings such as baskets and drawers with smooth, preferably easy-glide or soft-close mechanisms.
The issue of edge protection should not be underestimated either: PAX includes some rounded edges in the basic version, but special care is needed for models with mirror or glass fronts. Glass or mirror sliding doors are not ideal for children’s rooms.
Finally, I refer to IKEA’s safety tips for homes with children – the wall anchoring system is specifically recommended and illustrated there.
