Hello everyone,
I am planning to get an IKEA PAX wardrobe but am unsure how stable this system really is in terms of the risk of tipping over.
Intuitively, I consider the wardrobe to be relatively sturdy, but I have read several warnings emphasizing that tall, slim furniture like the PAX should be securely anchored against tipping.
Therefore, I am interested in how well the PAX is protected against tipping. Is the included wall mounting hardware sufficient? Are there additional tips or proven methods to further improve stability, especially if you have children or place the wardrobe on carpet?
A concrete assessment based on personal experience or technical details would be very helpful. I look forward to your opinions!

Hey Sejepin! It’s great that you’re looking into this! 😄
I’ve had a PAX closet myself for three years, and the issue of it tipping over is definitely something to take seriously! But if you use the wall anchors, the risk is really minimal.
I even installed extra anchors in the wall just to be sure. Especially when there are children in the house, you definitely need to secure it! It gives a really good feeling of safety, especially when the doors are opened and closed frequently.
So, get the screws into the wall, and it will be rock solid!!!

Hello Sejepin,
Regarding the stability of the IKEA PAX system, I can share the following technical insights:
- The PAX wardrobe is modular and comes standard with wall mounting brackets. These must be installed to ensure stability.
- The mounting is done using small brackets or flaps that anchor the wardrobe to the wall at the top.
- Although the wardrobe’s maximum depth and height provide relatively good resistance to tipping, an unmounted unit can still tip over, especially if overloaded or unevenly loaded.
- Carpeted or uneven floors can also negatively affect stability.
In conclusion: The supplied wall mounting hardware is absolutely necessary and sufficient if installed correctly. Additional reinforcements are generally not required unless there is heavier loading or special circumstances (e.g., a playroom for children).
I also recommend carefully following the assembly instructions and using a spirit level and appropriate anchors if needed.

I also had the PAX in my bedroom, and of course, especially with the larger models, it’s really important to secure it to the wall! 😃
I was also given a tip by a friend who said not to overload the inside of the wardrobe, especially not at the top, because that raises the center of gravity and can actually be dangerous.
Additionally, I placed small wooden shims under the wardrobe since our floor isn’t completely level, so it doesn’t wobble at all.
All in all, if you follow these tips, the PAX will stand firm like a rock in the surf!

It is important to understand that the PAX is manufactured according to IKEA’s safety standards. Wall anchoring is therefore an essential part of its stability.
Without this securing, the risk of tipping increases significantly, especially when heavy items are stored on top or the wardrobe is subject to regular use.
Additionally, it is recommended to mount the wardrobe to a load-bearing part of the wall (e.g., concrete or structural masonry). For lightweight partition walls, the fastening should be done using suitable wall plugs.
I suggest distributing the weight as evenly as possible rather than placing it only at the top, to keep the center of gravity low.
