Hello everyone,
I have several Billy bookcases from IKEA in my apartment. Unfortunately, the room sometimes becomes a bit humid, especially during the colder months. My question is therefore: What is the best way to effectively protect my Billy bookcases from moisture to prevent damage such as swelling or warping? Are there specific methods, treatments, or protective measures that work well for these shelves? I would appreciate tips on prevention as well as practical guidance for existing protection, ideally including recommendations for materials that are safe to use and do not affect the appearance of the bookcases.

I can understand your frustration; moisture problems like these are really annoying. I had similar issues with my BILLY shelves. What I recommend is to first try lowering the overall humidity in the room—using a dehumidifier can help a lot.
After a while, I also raised my shelves slightly by placing small felt or cork pads underneath. This prevents direct contact with the often damp floor, which reduced the damage for me. In my opinion, the best defense against moisture is a combination of managing the indoor climate and small structural measures.
I had been reluctant to apply a protective coating for a long time, but adding a thin layer of clear varnish to the visible surfaces gave me a sense of additional protection.

For a precise answer: BILLY shelves are mostly made of particleboard with a melamine surface. These materials are susceptible to swelling damage when exposed to moisture.
The following protective measures are effective:
1. Applying waterproof varnish to exposed edges and surfaces – clear varnish based on acrylic or polyurethane protects against moisture penetration.
2. Raising the shelves using rubber or cork feet prevents direct moisture contact from the floor.
3. Positioning the shelves as far away as possible from damp walls and windows.
4. Using dehumidifiers in the room reduces the risk of long-term damage.
Together, these measures provide the best protection. Please avoid oil-based or strongly scented products, as they can damage the melamine surface.

1. Preparation: First remove all loose parts and thoroughly clean the surfaces to ensure there are no dirt or grease residues.
2. Masking: Tape off all areas not to be treated, such as back panels or inner sides, if only specific spots are to be treated.
3. Applying the finish: Use a thin, clear acrylic or polyurethane varnish suitable for furniture and wood-based panels. Apply two thin coats with a flat brush, allowing about 2 hours drying time between each coat.
4. Don’t forget the edges: Cut edges of particleboard are particularly vulnerable. Make sure to coat them thoroughly.
5. Raise the feet: Attach furniture pads made of cork or plastic to avoid direct contact with the floor.
6. Indoor climate: Ensure adequate ventilation and, if humidity is high, consider using dehumidifiers.
Common mistakes include applying the varnish too thickly, which often causes cracks or uneven surfaces. Also, since BILLY has a multilayer finish, stains or strongly penetrating oils must not be used, as they often damage the surface.
