Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and used the stylish doors that go with it. Now, some of the doors are damaged and I am considering replacing them. My question is: Are there original replacement doors for Kallax from Ikea, or do you have to look for alternatives? If so, what experiences have you had with replacement products or custom-made solutions? I need doors that are as durable and precisely fitting as possible, and easy to install. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello tineil,

Regarding your question: Ikea generally does not offer replacement parts like Kallax doors individually, which is disappointing for many. However, you can check Ikea’s online store directly, as they sometimes have leftover stock or individual doors available as spare parts. If not, I would recommend the following approach:

1. Take precise measurements (height, width, thickness).
2. Look for custom-made doors made of wood or MDF that have comparable mounting points.
3. Pay attention to the fittings: usually clips or hinges are required that resemble the original ones.

A common mistake is measuring only the door surface without considering the frame thickness – this leads to doors that don’t fit properly.

Summary: Original replacement parts are rarely available; custom solutions are usually the way to go if you can’t find used doors in exactly the right size.

Original replacement parts for Kallax doors are almost never available. Check on Ebay Classifieds or other second-hand platforms, as you are more likely to find them there.

Hello tineil,

To shed some light on this: Kallax doors are sold by Ikea as complete units, usually as part of a set with the shelving unit or as a full assembly. Individual doors are not officially available as spare parts, which is due to the standardized mass production and the low price.

Technically, the doors are made from hardboard panels with a melamine-coated surface, so replicating them is not straightforward, especially if you want a uniform appearance or precise dimensions and functioning hinges for construction reasons.

What many don’t realize is that the doors are attached with clips and special hinges. These hinges often have a unique shape that is hard to reproduce exactly by third-party suppliers. If you’re looking for replacements, the following approach might help:

- Measure your doors very precisely, including all drill holes.
- Contact carpentry workshops or timber suppliers with your request for custom-made MDF doors with a white foil finish.
- It may be possible to order Ikea hinges separately so you don’t have to replace everything.

I’m curious: Would other door types be an option, such as doors with glass inserts or shelves you can install? If you want to create a more modern visual storage solution, a modification could be an alternative. How old is your Kallax? The condition of the material also matters for a complete solution.

Best regards!

Thanks for the tip, that sounds reasonable.

I will definitely give that a try.

Regarding your question, Palenar: My Kallax is about 3 years old, and the doors have the standard wood laminate surfaces. Glass inserts are nice but not a priority for me; I mainly want intact doors that close well, as I want to avoid dust.

Is it difficult to reproduce or replace the special hinges? Are there any compatible alternatives?

I think before too much is said about "custom doors" here, one should ask whether the need for replacement actually justifies the effort. Original spare parts are known to be rarely available from Ikea, but Kallax elements are usually inexpensive to replace.

If cost is not a big issue for you, it is often more efficient to simply buy a new door or even a new shelving unit. A more sustainable option could be to purchase used doors from matching models and possibly restore them.

The technical details regarding hinges are interesting, but I wonder whether such a complex repair is truly cost-effective.
