Hello everyone,

I am planning to get the PLATSA furniture system from IKEA and am currently looking into cable management. Since a clean look is especially important in combined living and working spaces, I’m interested in whether IKEA offers any specific fixtures or integrated solutions for the PLATSA system that make it easier to lay and hide cables.

Specifically, I’m asking: Are there any IKEA PLATSA furniture pieces with special features for cable management, such as built-in cable channels, pre-drilled holes, or other thoughtful design elements that help keep cables hidden or at least neatly organized?

Or is it necessary to use external cable boxes or custom modifications with PLATSA?

I look forward to your experiences and tips, including recommendations on which PLATSA module combinations work best in this context.

Hello Kaomar,

I’ll try to answer your question in detail so you get a clear picture:

The PLATSA system from IKEA is designed to be very flexible, covering different living and working areas. However, to my knowledge, it does not have specially integrated cable management features that are specifically intended for that purpose.

What you will find are modular furniture units with partially open or semi-open back panels that can be used as passages for cables. Some of the basic frames, for example, offer built-in cutouts in the back panel, or there are modules that can be arranged so that cables disappear behind the panels. However, this is meant more as a foundation, so you will need additional accessories like cable ties, cable clips, or separately available cable channels to keep things organized.

You can also work well with the different sizes in PLATSA to hide cables behind large cabinet units or run them along the back of a shelf.

If you want clean cable management, I recommend partly using the furniture as a support for practical cable channels that can be discreetly fixed to the inside or backside.

In summary: IKEA does not offer specific cable management features such as built-in channels or cable guides in PLATSA, but the modular system with its thoughtful openings and back panels provides an ideal base for your own cable management solutions.

I hope this helps!

I can mostly agree with naudan on this point.

What I would like to add: For my PLATSA setup, it was important that I could accommodate power strips and cables behind or inside the units. For this, I, for example, left out some back panels in certain places or arranged things so that cables could be routed through the openings in the base frames.

The furniture does not come with built-in cable channels, but its design makes it possible to create efficient cable management on your own.

In general, IKEA systems are rather minimalistic in this regard. So if you place special emphasis on structured cable management, it might be worth looking at accessories such as clips or hook-and-loop straps to keep cables tidy and secured.

If you are handy yourself, individual modifications (like drilling holes in back panels, etc.) can achieve even more.

Personally, I am satisfied with my setup as it offers a nice balance between modular flexibility and practical cable routing.

Unfortunately, there are no “magic compartments” or built-in cable covers. But that’s actually part of PLATSA’s strength: you can basically assemble the furniture yourself – including cable management with your own personal touch.

Here are a few tips on how to handle it smartly:
- Leave out some back panels or make sufficiently large cutouts
- Attach cable clips inside to guide cables neatly along the frame
- Fix cable ducts from accessories on the backside
- Use power strips with self-adhesive backs so they don’t dangle loosely

PLATSA is more like a chameleon than a specialist in cable management. But it offers plenty of room for DIY approaches. If you enjoy tinkering, you’ll probably enjoy getting the cable mess under control.

So: no built-in cable channels, but lots of options to customize – almost as flexible as the units themselves.

Good luck with the assembly!
