Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a custom IKEA Besta combination where I want to effectively combine both open and closed compartments. I aim to make the most of its modularity and adaptability. Specifically, I am interested in how to best combine open compartments (for example, for decorations or frequently used items) with closed cabinet elements (such as doors or drawers) without the overall look becoming too busy or the furniture system becoming unstable.

What are proven methods when assembling the Besta carcasses and shelves to both use storage space efficiently and achieve an appealing design?

Does anyone have tips regarding installation or recommendations for suitable doors, handles, or interior fittings specifically for this combination?

Thank you in advance!

Hello Numau,

I understand your question well, as the Besta system’s modularity really offers a lot of flexibility—especially when combining open and closed compartments.

Basically, I recommend that you first think carefully about how each compartment will be used, meaning what you want to store or display there. Open compartments are ideal for decorations or books, while closed compartments are better for items that need protection from dust.

- Make sure the modules are securely screwed together and, if necessary, anchored to the wall, especially when combining larger units. IKEA provides appropriate instructions for this.

- For doors and drawers, you can choose Besta doors with a soft-close feature for added convenience.

- Having modules with uniform widths makes it easier to create a visually harmonious layout of open and closed areas.

- Inside, you can arrange the shelves flexibly; some shelves can also be supplemented with inserts, for example, to organize work materials or media.

If you like, I can also give you more detailed suggestions for assembly—just let me know!

Hello,

for combining open and closed compartments in the IKEA Besta system, I recommend a structured planning approach:

- Decide in advance on the exact dimensions of each module to ensure a precise combination of open compartments (e.g., 60x40cm (24x16 inches)) and closed ones.
- Use standard Besta carcasses and add doors or frames that are compatible with the respective carcass depths (38 or 64cm (15 or 25 inches)).
- For a relaxed look, align the modules uniformly in horizontal or vertical rows so that the lines do not misalign.
- When choosing doors, consider the material (wood effect vs. glass front) and the opening mechanism; soft-close doors are now standard and recommended for their durability.

Assembly requires careful screwing and securing, ideally also with wall anchors for stabilization. Make sure the open compartments are not too deep to avoid any structural issues.

In summary: clear planning, attention to measurements, and precise fixing ensure a practical and attractive piece of furniture.

Absolutely, the soft-close system is a real advantage! No more slamming – especially useful if you have children or are often in a hurry.

In my Besta setup, I included some open compartments for books and some closed ones with drawers for small items. Tip: Color-coordinated inserts inside the compartments really make a difference and help keep things organized, unless you are a bit of a hoarder 😉

I would also recommend not extending the open compartments all the way to the top or bottom. This leaves some space for small plants or LEDs, making the combination look more lively.

The installation can be done by one person if you take your time, but it’s always a good idea to double-check—especially when securing it to the wall.

Numau, first design the overall width and height.
Open compartments are built with shelves, closed ones with doors.
Use appropriate frames to make assembly easier.
White or black cabinet colors create a uniform overall look.
Add handles according to your preference.
