Good morning everyone, I am currently looking into whether there are any Ikea Pax wardrobes specifically designed for use in damp rooms. More precisely, I want to know if there are Pax models whose materials or surfaces have been specially treated to better resist moisture and related issues such as warping or mold growth.
For me, it is especially important to find out whether the carcasses, doors, or interiors have any kind of damp room certification, or if it is generally recommended to use the Pax wardrobe only in dry areas.
Does anyone have experience with this or know of product features that clearly indicate suitability for damp environments? Thanks in advance for your opinions and tips!

I believe it is important to critically consider what exactly "wet room" means in your context.
Is it a bathroom with regular water vapor and splashing, or for example a basement room with occasional moisture?
Ikea does not classify Pax as suitable for wet rooms; this is clearly stated in the material descriptions. The particle boards swell when exposed to water.
For true wet room furnishings, you need to use specialist products, usually made of coated metal, plastic, or specially moisture-resistant engineered wood.
Pax may work temporarily in such environments, but long-term durability and material integrity are questionable.

A clear definition is often missing here, and it makes all the difference.
Rooms with very high moisture levels require waterproof and mold-resistant materials.
If you only mean occasional water vapor or increased humidity, conventional furniture can be used, provided it is properly maintained.
For Pax, this means that heavy moisture should simply be avoided, as there are no special modifications for it.

To clarify my situation: It’s a small bathroom with a shower and no window, so the humidity is relatively high here, even though an exhaust fan is installed. In theory, I could place the cabinet in a spot that is not directly next to the shower door.
I was uncertain because there is surprisingly little information from Ikea on this. I’m also interested to know if a particular paint or veneer coating used on Pax might be more resistant to moisture.
I would also be open to any special care instructions to help extend its lifespan.
Does anyone have details on the paints or surface treatments?

There is no special wet-area coating for Pax that explicitly covers damp environments.
Care instructions usually include: wiping off water immediately, avoiding harsh cleaning agents, and ensuring good room ventilation.
If you follow these guidelines, you can extend the lifespan somewhat – but there is no guarantee of suitability for wet rooms.

Timmyse3620 Aug 2023 17:02I can fully understand your concerns. Furniture designed for damp rooms can indeed be tricky, especially when working within a limited budget.
Perhaps a compromise could work: placing a wardrobe like Pax in an adjacent, drier area, or using an additional protective cover. This way, you maintain flexibility while also protecting the wardrobe.
It might also help to elevate the wardrobe slightly to prevent moisture rising from the floor.
Good luck with your project!

If you are looking for a wardrobe for a wet room, do not use wood-based materials.
Recommendation: Buy plastic or aluminum furniture that is specifically labeled as wet room furniture.
