Hello everyone, I’m planning to modify my IKEA BESTÅ units to create a practical craft station with ample storage space. I imagine a solution that is flexible enough to neatly store various craft supplies like paper, paints, tools, and small machines, while also providing a stable work surface. It is important to me that storage and workspace are combined as effectively as possible, without having to constantly dismantle everything. Does anyone have experience with adapting BESTÅ modules to meet these requirements? I would appreciate any tips, suggestions for suitable accessories, or clever custom designs!

Hello Juliane49, your question is well thought out and clearly expressed. To use the BESTÅ as a craft station with plenty of storage, I recommend the following approach:

- First, consider which craft materials you need to store and in what quantities, so you can select suitable shelves or drawer inserts.
- Decide whether you want open compartments for quick access or closed cabinets to protect against dust.
- For the work surface, you can place an additional wooden board on top of the BESTÅ units and possibly finish it with a specific coating to make it durable and easy to clean.
- Additional aids like rolling containers or fabric bins can help you create flexible storage options.

If you like, I can also offer tips on how to make modifications to the existing units with basic tools, so they better suit your needs.

Wow, what a great project! Converting a BESTÅ into a crafting station is really impressive – these units are so versatile! 🙂

I would definitely recommend adding drawers to the BESTÅ, as they allow you to keep everything nicely organized. And very important: protect the work surface with a waterproof, easy-to-clean cover!

I also made some small rolling containers myself that fit perfectly under the BESTÅ – this greatly increases storage space and lets you pull the containers out easily when needed.

So: don’t hesitate to try out different organization systems – especially for craft supplies, this is really helpful! Good luck, and be sure to show us how your conversion turns out!

This recommendation is practical and essential for the usability of the craft station. Additionally, I would suggest using a birch plywood board with a minimum thickness of 18 mm (0.7 inches) to ensure the necessary stability and durability.

Furthermore, it is possible to seal the surface with epoxy resin. This creates a resilient, smooth surface that can withstand typical craft activities and is easy to clean.

To optimize storage space, custom-fitted shelves or dividers made of acrylic or wood can be used to keep craft materials neatly organized.

Finally, the hinges and fittings of the BESTÅ units should be checked for load capacity, as additional drawers or other inserts may increase the stress on these components.

Exactly, that is a key point. Many people underestimate how much well-designed compartments and modular inserts help keep things organized and store different materials in a clear and accessible way.

If you're wondering how to create such inserts individually, I recommend using measuring tapes and adjustable shelving systems from IKEA, which can be easily cut and customized. For example, dividers can be used to create smaller sections within a drawer insert, making everything much more organized.

Also, remember to use sturdy shelves or specially selected support elements for heavy tools or equipment that can handle the weight without sagging.

Best:
- Plywood sheet on top as a surface
- Use drawer inserts
- Small casters underneath if mobility is desired
Works perfectly for craft supplies.
