Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a few Ikea Platsa shelving units and am generally impressed with the system’s flexibility. However, the standard white looks a bit dull and neutral, so the shelves hardly make any visual impact in my living room.

Therefore, my question to you is: Are there any proven tips or techniques for enhancing the color of Ikea Platsa shelves without compromising their stability or functionality? I am particularly interested in options like painting, applying adhesive films, or using colored back panels.

Do you have experience with specific types of paint (e.g., chalk paint, spray paint), particular materials, or accessories that can effectively and permanently improve their appearance?

I look forward to your suggestions, as well as any advice on the necessary tools, preparation, or protection against future damage. Thanks in advance!

Good question. The most important thing is to consider the surface texture of the material. PLATSA parts are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard, which can be challenging to paint due to low adhesion.

- It is highly recommended to lightly sand the surfaces first using fine sandpaper with a grit of 220 or higher.
- Then apply a special bonding agent or primer that is suitable for melamine surfaces to improve adhesion.

This is the only way to prevent the paint from peeling or appearing uneven.

If you use adhesive films instead, make sure the film is specifically designed for furniture and adheres well. Cheap or unsuitable films can peel off quickly, especially at the edges.

Regarding stability: As long as you don’t drill holes or mechanically alter the furniture, you won’t affect the PLATSA’s functionality. Paint and adhesive films typically do not have a negative impact.

To continue the topic started by Tause, I would like to share some practical suggestions.

- Color design with chalk paint: Chalk paints adhere well to many surfaces, have a matte finish, and can be easily blended after scratching or sanding. For PLATSA, however, I always make sure to do proper surface preparation, meaning thorough sanding and, if necessary, priming.

- Spray paints: A high-quality spray paint from a hardware store is recommended, especially because it allows for very even coverage without brush marks. Apply in thin layers!

- Replacing backsplashes: A great option is using colored or patterned backsplashes (e.g., painted MDF, wallpaper, or films) – these can be easily swapped out, making it simple to add playful color accents.

- Custom handles and decorative elements: Often underestimated are colorful or unique handles, which visually enhance an otherwise plain cabinet body.

Important: Always let everything dry completely and, if necessary, seal with a clear coat to protect the surface.

Yay, I refreshed my PLATSA myself last year and can only say: Go for it!

Absolutely! I sanded the surface with fine sandpaper, then sprayed it with a special primer, and finally applied several layers of acrylic paint. It held up really well!

- My tip: It’s best to test the paint’s compatibility with the surface in an inconspicuous spot beforehand.
- Also, taping the edges with painter’s tape is recommended to get a really clean finish.

And don’t forget: The finished shelves look much more refined! Especially in bright colors as an accent in the room, they really stand out 😊.

This advice is indeed crucial. I would like to add the following for a durable, aesthetically pleasing finish:

- Remove all fittings and handles before starting.
- Lightly sand the surfaces of the PLATSA elements (grit between 180 and 240).
- Apply a primer that is specifically approved for melamine-coated surfaces.
- Then use either spray paint or a high-quality acrylic paint that dries well and resists yellowing.
- Finally, I recommend sealing with a matte clear coat to protect the color and make the surface scratch-resistant.

For those who want to color the back panels, I suggest treating them separately or replacing them altogether. This allows for creative freedom and does not significantly affect the shelf construction.

This way, you avoid unwanted surface issues and achieve a long-lasting, attractive result.
