Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of optimizing Ikea PAX wardrobe doors in the hallway. Specifically, I am looking for ways to make the doors more resistant to frequent opening and potentially moisture or dirt, as our hallway is used quite often and often needs some protection against wetness or dirt.

Additionally, I am interested in any practical options to adjust the appearance of the PAX doors so they better fit the hallway ambiance without having to buy completely new doors. Does anyone have tips or experiences, especially regarding material reinforcement, protective coatings, or creative modifications that make daily use in the hallway easier?

I would recommend applying self-adhesive protective films to the doors. They are water-repellent and protect against scratches. For aesthetics, you can try films with different patterns or wood finishes.

Hello Dabartosz, your question is very specific and important since hallways are often subject to heavier use. To optimize the PAX doors, you should consider applying a sealant or protective varnish. For example, there are clear polyurethane-based varnishes that are water-resistant and impact-resistant. It is essential to lightly sand the surface beforehand to ensure good adhesion of the varnish without damaging the door’s texture. For aesthetics, you could also use self-adhesive furniture films, but make sure they are of good quality so they don’t start peeling after a short time. If you clean the doors frequently, a matte or satin finish is recommended, as fingerprints and dirt are less visible on these surfaces.

Another idea: If the doors are used frequently, you can also install soft-close hinges. This protects the doors and ensures quieter closing. They are compatible with PAX and an easy upgrade.

Since you mentioned this option with clear varnish, do you have any tips for the exact preparation of the doors? I’m especially interested in whether the doors should be removed beforehand and if there is a recommended type of varnish for veneer or painted fronts.

And one more question about the soft-close hinges: Can these be installed without major modifications, or do you need to drill holes, etc.?

For preparation: It’s best to remove the doors first, then lightly sand them with fine-grit sandpaper (220 to 320 grit) – this helps the paint adhere better. For veneer fronts, I recommend a matte acrylic paint that remains breathable. For painted doors, you can also use polyurethane paint, which is more durable.

Soft-close hinges are usually designed to fit the existing drill holes and are installed with special dowels. Major modifications are generally not necessary, but you should carefully follow the Ikea instructions.
