ᐅ How can I install IKEA Metod drawers so they operate smoothly and securely?

RemeoHello everyone,
I am currently assembling an Ikea Metod kitchen unit with drawers, but I’m having trouble because the drawers do not slide smoothly, and I’m not completely sure if the installation is correct. My specific question is: How do I install Ikea Metod drawers so that they slide easily while also being securely fixed?
During assembly, I attached the telescopic runners according to the instructions; however, I can feel a slight rubbing, and the drawer sticks a bit when opening. Are there any special tips or important details to ensure the runners work perfectly?
I look forward to advice on assembly precision, proper alignment, and whether lubricants or other aids are recommended. Thank you in advance for your support!

Hey Remeo,
first of all, it’s great that you’re putting so much thought into the smooth operation of your Metod drawers! 😄 Proper alignment of the slides is key. I always keep the following points in mind:
- Mount telescopic slides exactly parallel; otherwise, you’ll get friction.
- Tighten all screws just finger-tight first, then make minor adjustments before fully tightening.
- Sometimes a light spray of silicone lubricant on the sliding rails helps – not too much, just a thin film.
Oh, and also check if the drawer front is properly positioned and not rubbing against the cabinet sides.
With a bit of patience and the right approach, they’ll run smoothly—literally on rails! 😉

I also often question the use of lubricants—where Ikea components are involved, they are usually designed with plastic runners. This can lead to lubricant residue that attracts dust.
So, is it always really advisable to use silicone spray? Personally, I recommend careful adjustment first before applying any lubricants.

Hello Remeo,
It’s good that you address this topic so precisely, because the Metod drawers are technically brilliant, but only if installed carefully. I recommend the following step-by-step approach:
- First, always check that all components are undamaged and straight. Warped drawer fronts cause uneven loads.
- The telescopic slides must be perfectly parallel to each other. Use the installation guide to measure whether the slides on both sides are exactly the same distance apart.
- Never fully tighten the screws right away. First pre-drill, tighten slightly, operate the drawer in and out several times without obstruction, then finally secure them.
- You have a small adjustment option by aligning the drawer clips on the slides.
- The guide rails are usually pre-lubricated at the factory; additional lubricant is generally not necessary but can help with older models.
My tip: If you notice the drawer sticking, especially check the connection of the front to the cabinet. Excessive pressure on the front side can also hinder smooth movement.
If you want, I can also explain how to adjust the drawers to minimize lateral play, which greatly improves stability.

Thank you for the many helpful suggestions!
@glamo: Your idea to check the front panel for contact pressure is interesting because I do actually feel slight resistance. I had only plugged in the front panel but hadn’t fine-tuned it yet. How exactly can I still adjust the front panel vertically or in depth without opening the entire assembly?
Also, I would like to know how to properly adjust the drawer clips on the runners, as that sounds like a good leverage point for smoother operation.
