ᐅ Are there custom-made shelves available that fit perfectly into the Kallax unit?

justin64Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into whether there are custom-made, precisely fitting shelves available specifically for the IKEA Kallax shelving unit. My idea is to enable even more flexible use of the space within the Kallax cubes—essentially tailor-made shelves that can be produced in different materials or with special dimensions, unlike the standard shelves from IKEA.
Has anyone had experience with custom-made shelves for Kallax, or knows suppliers who offer such precise solutions? It is also important to me that the quality is at least comparable to the original, but preferably more durable, as I plan to store primarily heavy books and electronic equipment in the shelves.
Thank you for your support!

whether there are precisely fitting custom shelves specifically for the IKEA Kallax shelving unitRegarding custom shelves for Kallax units: Some carpenters and joiners do offer made-to-measure shelves that fit perfectly into the Kallax compartments. It’s important to measure the recesses accurately, including the typical shelf depth, because the Kallax does not have a classic groove for shelves but instead uses support strips.
IKEA’s standard shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating. For custom shelves, plywood or MDF with more durable surfaces (e.g., real wood veneer, special finishes) is often recommended while also improving load-bearing capacity.
My advice: take precise measurements and consult a local carpenter. Be cautious with DIY stores or online services, as they often work with standard sizes and may not always provide a perfect fit for the specific Kallax system.

Joineries and carpenters making custom floors to measureThat sounds very promising, thanks for the tip! I can definitely understand how frustrating it is when you’re looking for something specific and only come across the standard Kallax-type solutions – I had a similar experience with items I wanted to be a bit more durable.
I’m curious if anyone has already found a supplier who, in addition to simple customization, also offers special material options? Or at least provides advice on stability and materials?
It would be great if we could share experiences here to help make the right decision when ordering a custom-made product, without having to order blindly.

custom-fit shelves as special order specifically for the IKEA Kallax shelving unitThat sounds like a great project! 🙂 Some time ago, I had custom shelves made at a small woodworking studio. The consultation was excellent because I had specific requests – for example, colored plywood and a non-slip surface.
Kallax is really a classic, but the standard shelves can be quite basic, especially when you want to place something heavy or unusual on them. With the custom shelves, I now have more stability and also a real eye-catcher in the room.
So, if anyone needs encouragement: it is definitely possible, and the result is really rewarding!

The depth of the shelf board must be chosen so that it does not interfere with the standard support strips of the unit.
Additionally, when selecting materials, a thickness of at least 15–18 mm (0.6–0.7 inches) should be considered if higher load-bearing capacity than standard shelves is required. The surface treatment can vary; the key factor is stability under load.
If someone hires a joinery or woodworking shop, I recommend providing the exact Kallax measurements and describing the intended use. This ensures the best results, even for custom-made pieces.

custom-fit shelves as special orders for the Kallax shelving unitI can only confirm that there are many small companies and local craftsmen who make exactly these shelves to customer specifications. You can even order them online if you provide the measurements.
A small tip from my experience: Make sure the edges are well protected, for example with edge banding, so the shelves last longer—especially if you take them in and out frequently.
By the way, the standard shelves are often quite thin, so a custom-made one not only improves the look but also the handling of heavier items. And hey, it makes the Kallax much more personalized!
