pietu35Hello everyone, I am currently planning to get an Ikea Pax wardrobe but I’m facing an issue that some of you might be able to help me with: What experience do you have with the Ikea Pax system on uneven floors?
My floor is not completely level; it has slight irregularities and in some spots it feels a bit soft—I assume there is an older wooden substructure underneath that is no longer fully stable. I am particularly interested in how the stability and durability of the wardrobe behave on such a surface.
Do you have any tips for preparing the floor to avoid damage or excessive tilting? Or perhaps your own solutions you have used to stabilize something like this? I would appreciate any kind of experience or advice—especially if someone has already combined the Pax wardrobe with this kind of issue.

Pax wardrobes rely on a relatively stable base panel, which is normally designed for level and solid flooring. Problems can arise if the floor is uneven or has soft spots.
- For minor adjustments, I recommend using special adjustable furniture feet or installing firm leveling boards (e.g., OSB boards) to stabilize the floor.
- Assembling directly on soft wood without reinforcement will cause sagging over time and may negatively affect the wardrobe’s function and stability.
In general: The area should be inspected and, if necessary, adjusted before installation; otherwise, the risk of damage to the Pax system increases.

Your question is really important because Pax, due to its modular construction and the relatively thin base panel, tends to be sensitive to instability.
I recommend the following approach:
1. Floor analysis: Check for unevenness precisely using a spirit level (ideally laser-assisted). If differences exceed 5 mm (0.2 inches), corrective measures are strongly advised.
2. Stabilization: Install a 12-15 mm (0.5–0.6 inch) thick multiplex or OSB panel fully under the cabinet. Make sure it is perfectly level to avoid stress points.
3. Add adjustable feet: Ikea does not offer special feet for Pax, but there are third-party suppliers who provide height-adjustable feet with a wide base. These reduce point loads and compensate for unevenness.
4. Long-term load: It’s not only the initial condition that matters but also how the floor reacts under load over time. Soft spots can deform further, so regular inspection is necessary.
A question for you: How large are the typical unevenness and how soft does the floor feel? Depending on the extent, I would even consider inspecting or renewing the entire subfloor.

Here is a brief guide in case you decide to stabilize:
- Step 1: Measure the uneven spots. A spirit level helps to reveal even small dents or bulges.
- Step 2: If necessary, level out the uneven areas with wooden dowels or wedges.
- Step 3: Place an MDF or OSB board underneath. Make sure the board is larger than the cabinet’s base area, as this distributes the load better.
- Step 4: Alternatively, you can attach rubber pads to the boards. This prevents slipping and protects against moisture.
Common mistakes include using leveling shims that are too small or neglecting regular checks, which can cause problems over time.
If you have already assembled a Pax: Gently move the cabinet back and forth to check if the floor gives way.
