Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with integrated handle grooves and want to make the project both elegant and functional. I find the handle grooves visually very appealing, but I am not exactly sure how to proceed during installation and later use to ensure a clean appearance as well as practical handling. I am especially interested in which installation steps are particularly critical, how to attach the fronts without visible screws or other distracting elements, and whether there are special tips for making the handles in the grooves as ergonomic and durable as possible. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any important considerations when connecting and aligning multiple cabinets so that the overall look remains consistent and stable. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello magakin, I’m happy to pick this up since I’ve built several Metod cabinets with recessed handles myself. Basically, I would divide the process into three stages: preparation, assembly, and fine adjustment.

- Preparation: When purchasing, make sure the fronts have the correct drill holes and that the recessed handles are cleanly finished. If your fronts don’t have pre-routed recesses, it’s best to have them routed professionally.

- Assembly: Use the original Metod carcasses and first assemble each cabinet completely on its own. Attach the recessed handle fronts only after the carcass is properly aligned and secured.

- Fine adjustment: Use the height and side adjustment features of the Metod hinges to precisely set the gaps between the fronts. For a neat appearance, the gaps must not be too wide or uneven.

It is also important to countersink the screws for the recessed handles properly and, if needed, cover them with caps or small felt pads to avoid scratches. For ergonomic handling, the recessed handles should be at least 30cm (12 inches) long to allow a comfortable grip.

To connect multiple cabinets, I recommend using the included IKEA connecting fittings, which are sturdy if positioned correctly. Ensure a solid substructure and that the floor is level to prevent any warping.

I hope this helps as an overview!

Hello magakin, very good and precise question! I’d like to add to taudi’s tips by including some practical advice for installation.

First of all, it’s important to take your time with precise measurements – not just the external dimensions of the cabinets, but also the exact height of the top edge of the recessed handles. It makes a big difference whether the recessed handles are positioned ergonomically on doors or drawers.

Regarding installation, I can add that it’s often helpful to use a small guide rail or a string line when attaching the fronts of cabinets that have recessed handles. This helps you avoid misalignment and ensures a straight line for all handles.

The choice of material for the fronts also matters: matte lacquered or foil-covered fronts tend to show scratches more quickly. In this case, low-maintenance but durable melamine fronts may be advantageous, especially for recessed handles that are frequently touched.

When joining multiple cabinets, take your time to adjust angles and heights. A spirit level and a plumb bob should always be at hand. This ensures not only the right appearance but also functionality and durability.

Do you need tips on later care and maintenance of the recessed handles? I’m happy to help.

For recessed handles, always make sure to deburr thoroughly to avoid injury from sharp edges. Light sanding helps with this.

Also, when connecting the cabinets, be sure to align them at the same height to prevent uneven gaps.

The installation of the fronts should only take place after the carcass is complete, as adjustments can then be made more easily.

Thanks for this tip, that really makes sense. I also considered whether it might be possible to insert the screws from behind the fronts to keep the front surface completely smooth. However, it seems IKEA doesn’t offer this as a standard option, right?

Could you please briefly explain how this is done in practice when hanging the fronts? Do you use a wooden rail or another solution?

One more question: Are there differences in stability between the various types of recessed handles (e.g., different profiles or materials)? I want to make sure my cabinets don’t have issues even after extended use.

Hello magakin, I would like to add some information to your questions:

Regarding the screws: IKEA usually uses screws for handle grooves that are inserted from the back through the carcass into the front panel. It is important to choose screws that are long enough to ensure a secure hold but not so long that they go all the way through the back. The idea of mounting the screws completely invisible is not exactly standard, but with cover caps, as taudi mentioned, you can keep the front appearance very clean.

Regarding the guide rails: I often use simple wooden slats that I place parallel to the front on the floor, so I can set the front panel against them and align it before fastening. These serve as orientation aids during assembly, especially when multiple fronts need to be mounted in a row.

Concerning the stability of the grooves, there are slight differences depending on the profile thickness and the material used. Aluminum profiles are more durable than plastic, although the difference is usually minimal for normal household use. What matters most is that the attachment is solid and the groove is not deformed during assembly.

In general, I recommend assembling the fronts carefully and precisely, as adjusting them later can be somewhat difficult.
