Hello everyone, I have a problem with the doors of my Ikea Pax wardrobe: the hinges keep sticking when opening and closing, causing a hard, sometimes grinding noise, which makes moving the door noticeably difficult.
I have already checked whether the doors are properly aligned, and all screws seem to be tightened securely. Nevertheless, the sticking remains, and the doors no longer close as smoothly as they did in the beginning.
I am particularly interested in common causes for sticking issues with Ikea Pax door hinges, whether there are specific lubricants recommended, and if anyone has tips for a long-term solution.
What experiences have you had with these hinges? Are there known weak points where early intervention is advisable? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

I once sprayed the hinges on a Pax wardrobe with a slightly dry silicone spray — it makes the movement smoother without adding too much grease, which attracts dust. Important: Don’t soak the hinges with oil, or dirt will build up quickly and cause even more problems.
Sometimes, loosening the screws a bit and realigning the door helps, since misaligned doors cause exactly that kind of stress.
Good luck! And if you’ve already tried completely removing and reinstalling the hinges: that can sometimes help too, like a reset for the mechanism 😁

I am particularly interested in understanding the common causes of sticking issues with Ikea Pax door hinges, whether there are specific lubricants recommended, and if anyone has tips for a long-lasting solution. To address the problem precisely, it is first important to determine whether the sticking is caused mechanically or by stress within the cabinet. Ikea Pax hinges are usually self-adjusting, but if the installation is not perfectly aligned, binding can occur.
I recommend the following detailed steps:
- Check all mounting screws to ensure they are tight, especially the hinge plate on the cabinet side.
- Verify that the door alignment is correct: vertical and horizontal positioning greatly affects smooth operation.
- The hinges have bearings at the pivot point, which can be treated with a contamination-free, PTFE-based lubricant; only a drop is necessary.
- Avoid using oily or greasy substances, as they attract dust and can harden or stick due to heat or temperature changes.
- If the noise sounds grinding, there might be a foreign object (wood splinter, screw debris) inside the hinge housing – carefully cleaning with a fine brush or compressed air can help.
If you like, I can also ask you some questions to better assess the situation, for example:
- Are the doors made of glass or wood?
- When was the cabinet assembled?
- Does the sticking occur regardless of the ambient temperature?
This way, the troubleshooting can be narrowed down.

I had the same issue, and it was really just a case of minor misalignment and lack of hinge maintenance. After slightly adjusting the hinge screws and applying silicone spray, my Pax door now operates perfectly without any fuss!
You shouldn’t approach IKEA furniture too mechanically; often, small adjustments can make a big difference. Keep at it—it’s worth it!

The hinges have bearings at the joint, which can be treated with a contamination-free lubricant based on PTFE; only a single drop is necessary.I would like to add that many users apply the wrong lubricants, such as WD-40 or generally oil-based products, which may work temporarily but tend to attract dirt and cause sticking over time.
For a long-lasting treatment, specially formulated PTFE sprays or dry lubricants that do not attract dirt are recommended.
In addition, the hinge should be cleaned before lubrication, for example with isopropanol, to remove old lubricant residues.
It is also important to check whether the door’s closing mechanism (e.g., damper or magnetic mechanism) is not damaged, as this can also cause the door to feel like it’s sticking.

I consider this the crucial point! If the hinge sticks, it is almost always due to incorrect installation or misalignment. Lubrication can only be a disguise – lubricate a machine that isn’t precisely fitted, and it will still stick.
Ikea relies heavily on precise assembly for these cabinets – this is rarely questioned, but improperly installed doors are the main cause. Not to forget: the quality of the hinges is functional but not high-performance engineering. So, don’t expect lasting smoothness without adjustment.
