Hello everyone,

I am planning to mount an IKEA Besta shelving unit on my wall. However, I want to avoid drilling since it is a rental apartment and I don’t want to leave any holes. My question is: Is there a way to securely and stably attach the Besta shelving unit to the wall without drilling?

I understand that wall mounting prevents the shelf from tipping over, so I am looking for solutions that are just as reliable but do not require complicated drilling. Are there special adhesive systems, brackets, or other techniques that anyone has successfully used?

I would appreciate any tips, experiences, or assessments regarding the safety of such alternatives. Thank you!

In general, attaching furniture like the IKEA Besta to the wall is very important for safety reasons, to prevent the unit from tipping over—especially when it is built tall or loaded.

A completely drill-free and fully secure solution is difficult, but there are some options:

- Strong adhesive mounting systems (e.g., special double-sided tapes designed for high adhesion). However, these are usually intended for light loads and carry the risk of slipping with heavy furniture.

- Alternatively, some manufacturers offer frame or clamp brackets that are fixed to the bottom of the furniture and hold the unit to the wall using tension or pressure mechanisms. Unfortunately, these are not always compatible with Besta.

- Another option is specifically designed wall clamp strips or self-adhesive hooks connected with a strap to prevent tipping. While less reliable than screws, these can work for light to moderate loads.

Ultimately, you need to carefully consider the product you choose and your living situation. Without drilling, it is a compromise solution—if stability is the top priority, I recommend at least minimally drilled attachment in a discreet area, if possible.

I mounted my Besta shelf using strong adhesive strips designed specifically for heavy loads. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand and allow the adhesives to cure for 24 hours. However, this method only works on smooth walls and is not suitable for large or heavily loaded furniture.

I would like to add a brief guide, as these solutions are often misunderstood:

1. Clamp mounts that do not require drilling often rely on mechanical pressure. The furniture is pushed into an extendable clamp at the bottom, which presses against the ceiling or wall.

2. These systems require the surface to be perfectly stable and even; otherwise, the hold is compromised, or the clamp may damage the furniture.

3. In the case of IKEA Besta, the modular carcass structure is relatively lightweight – even when loaded, there is a significant tipping risk. Therefore, the clamping force must be very strong.

4. An important precaution is to regularly check these pressure systems to ensure they remain securely fixed.

Conclusion: If drilling into the wall is not allowed, clamp solutions are the best option, but they require precise installation and regular checking. They can be a good choice for rental apartments but are not a completely worry-free solution.

Hello Merila,

I understand your concerns about drilling in a rental apartment—I feel the same way. I tried securing my Besta without drilling, but personally, I wasn’t sure if it would hold.

That sounds interesting, but aren’t you worried about how durable that is? In my case, it came loose after six months despite all precautions.

Fortunately, I wasn’t injured, but since then I prefer to have a few small holes drilled and then fill or cover them when moving out. Safety is my priority.

Sometimes you have to balance protecting the walls with preventing accidents, especially when there are children or pets in the home.

You shouldn’t simply assume that a secure attachment without drilling is possible. The key question is: what kind of loads will the system be subjected to?

Even adhesive systems, as some recommend, have their limits. The adhesion strength on wallpaper, painted, or porous surfaces can be significantly weaker than manufacturers claim – additionally, the load from a vertically loaded piece of furniture creates shear and tipping forces.

Another factor: the adhesive strength of such glues decreases over time due to temperature fluctuations or humidity in the room.

Therefore, in my view, so-called “no-drill” methods should be considered only as temporary solutions or for very lightweight furniture, but not for something the size of a Besta, which can be loaded with heavy appliances or books.

My advice: better rely on tenant protection and fix any damage with filler and paint when moving out, rather than compromising safety.
