MARIUSBIHello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling my new Ikea Metod kitchen and want to integrate storage systems as efficiently as possible. My question is: What is the best way to build Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with integrated storage solutions to maximize space while keeping the cabinets stable and functional?
I am not only referring to assembling the cabinets themselves but also looking for tips on planning the interior fittings, such as drawer runners, shelves, or pull-outs that fit the Metod cabinet sizes.
I have some DIY experience but want to avoid common mistakes that are easy to overlook, especially when combining different storage systems.
I would appreciate any advice, whether it’s about installation, space organization, or possibly affordable alternatives to Ikea’s own systems that are still compatible.

Hello MARIUSBI,
First of all, regarding the planning: Ikea Metod cabinets are very modular, so it’s important to know from the start exactly which storage systems you want to integrate.
- My tip: Start by choosing the right cabinet width and depth to easily install the drawers later on.
- For drawers, make sure to use full-extension slides with high load capacity, which Ikea often offers as accessories.
- Interior drawers and shelves should be arranged to use storage space at different heights, not just evenly spaced.
Regarding common mistakes: Sometimes the carcass is assembled too early, without fitting the drawer slides first – this makes it difficult to align the slides precisely later.
I would recommend installing the support structures first, then mounting the drawer slides, and finally attaching the fronts and drawers.
Summary:
1. Carefully align and secure the cabinet carcass
2. Install the drawer slides accurately
3. Insert the drawers and interior slides
4. Attach the fronts
If you are considering alternatives: just make sure the fittings are compatible with the 32mm system, which is standard for Metod.
Good luck!

Use Ikea’s own drawer slides; they fit best. That’s not necessarily true. There are third-party suppliers that offer higher-quality drawer slides, which can even be quieter. However, without precise planning, you might run into compatibility issues.
Also, I believe the Ikea system’s grid should not be underestimated. If you simply install different systems, you quickly lose modular flexibility and make future modifications more difficult.
My advice: If you want to use third-party products, be sure to carefully check all dimensions and drill points beforehand. Otherwise, you may end up with more hassle than benefit.

I had planned to fully assemble the cabinets and then install the storage systems. Maybe I’ll start by assembling just the frames and walls and then add the internal drawers step by step.

If you plan to use third-party components, be sure to check all measurements and drilling points in advance. Thanks also for the heads-up. Are there any manufacturers you would recommend that offer good alternatives to Metod? The Ikea solutions sometimes seem a bit expensive for the size of the drawers.
Also, I’m interested in how you configure the drawers to combine deep storage with clear, shallow trays. I’ve read that it’s better to use wider drawers at the bottom and shallow shelves or trays at the top, but I’m not sure how this works best with Metod.
