ᐅ My KALLAX unit becomes less stable every time I move it – any tips?

Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and am really happy with the flexibility it offers. However, I have a problem that’s quite frustrating: every time I move the shelf, whether just a few centimeters (inches) or to a completely different spot, it noticeably loses stability. It wobbles slightly, which feels quite unsafe considering its size.
I’ve already tried to align everything perfectly straight, but after moving it, it just doesn’t seem as stable as before. It’s not standing on a perfectly level surface, but it’s also not really tilted or uneven. The shelf rests on four feet directly on the floor, without a base or anything similar.
Do you have any tips on how to improve its stability? Maybe someone knows tricks or ideas to fix this issue without having to buy additional furniture gliders or pads? Is there perhaps some kind of common “construction flaw” with the KALLAX that causes this?
I look forward to your experiences or advice on how to get my shelf safely stable again after each move. Thanks!

Hello Mariele6,
I can well understand your problem. KALLAX shelves are relatively simple in design, usually made of particleboard with a veneer, which can quickly lead to an unstable base on uneven floors.
What you can try:
- First, check the base carefully with a small spirit level or a straight edge. Even small differences of 1-2mm (0.04-0.08 inches) can be critical here.
- Make sure not to overlook the black plastic feet of the shelves. Although they help, they are not adjustable.
- If you don’t want to use rubber pads, consider using small wooden shims. You can stick them onto the feet yourself to compensate minimally.
- Also, check the corner joints of the shelf – sometimes tightening or retightening the screws, as mentioned, helps.
I hope these tips help you! If you have any questions about the individual steps, I am happy to assist.

KALLAX does not have integrated leveling or self-adjusting feet

I would like to take a somewhat more critical look at this topic:
That seems a bit unusual to me. A shelf should not lose stability just from being repositioned, as long as the fastenings are properly done and the floor is only slightly uneven.
My suspicion is that either the connectors wear out from frequent moving, or incorrect assembly causes increasing play in the joints.
It would be interesting to know if the screws or dowels are checked after each move. If not, this could lead to a safety risk over time, especially with KALLAX shelves, which are not designed for frequent relocation.
Also, the absence of wall anchoring can significantly affect stability. I would recommend always installing wall anchors, even if the shelf is placed in different locations.
What do you think about the idea that the problem may not only be the floor but possibly the assembly itself?

Thank you all for the diverse feedback!
I have now checked all the screws and anchors again – everything is firmly in place, with no visible damage. The shelf is not standing on carpet but on a laminate floor, which appears quite level; I also verified this with a small spirit level. Nevertheless, the effect remains that it wobbles after being moved.
I will now try the suggestion of using wooden shims or self-adhesive pads to compensate for the last small uneven spots. I hadn’t considered wall anchoring so far, but that would probably be the safest solution, even though it’s a bit impractical for flexible rearranging.
Thank you also for encouraging me to look at the situation with a bit of humor – that really made me smile! 🙂
Let’s see if I can get these stability issues under control with that.
