Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and am really happy with the flexibility it offers. However, I have a problem that’s quite frustrating: every time I move the shelf, whether just a few centimeters (inches) or to a completely different spot, it noticeably loses stability. It wobbles slightly, which feels quite unsafe considering its size.

I’ve already tried to align everything perfectly straight, but after moving it, it just doesn’t seem as stable as before. It’s not standing on a perfectly level surface, but it’s also not really tilted or uneven. The shelf rests on four feet directly on the floor, without a base or anything similar.

Do you have any tips on how to improve its stability? Maybe someone knows tricks or ideas to fix this issue without having to buy additional furniture gliders or pads? Is there perhaps some kind of common “construction flaw” with the KALLAX that causes this?

I look forward to your experiences or advice on how to get my shelf safely stable again after each move. Thanks!

Have you checked if all the screws are properly tightened? They often loosen during transport or assembly. If that’s all good, you might also try placing small felt or rubber pads under the feet.

Your description suggests that your floor is not completely level, even if it doesn’t seem obvious at first glance. KALLAX shelves do not have built-in leveling or self-adjusting feet, which means that an uneven surface can significantly affect their stability.

My advice:
1. Check the floor level with a spirit level.
2. If there are uneven spots, I recommend using glide pads with built-in leveling features or self-adhesive plastic feet.
3. Avoid placing the shelf directly on carpet, as it often compresses and can cause instability.

Additionally, a diagonal back panel reinforcement can improve stability if your model does not already include one.

That sounds really frustrating when your shelf becomes unstable every time you move it. I can understand how unsettling it is when something wobbles—especially if you store items there that shouldn’t fall off.

Maybe making small adjustments to the feet could help them have better contact with the floor. For me, slightly angling small felt pads worked well to compensate for minor unevenness in the floor.

Even though you say this isn’t ideal, you might also consider lightly securing the shelf to the wall each time you reposition it, especially if you move it frequently. Safety comes first, and that way you can feel more at ease. 🙂

Hey!

I’m familiar with the stability issue too. KALLAX isn’t exactly the heaviest shelf, and if the floor isn’t perfectly level, you can definitely notice it. 😅

My tip: just use small rubber pads or furniture feet underneath – that really helps prevent wobbling and makes the shelf much steadier. And hey, you can even adjust the feet a bit to compensate for minor unevenness.

At first, you want to avoid that, but believe me, a small rubber piece costs almost nothing and makes a huge difference.

In the end: always take it with a pinch of humor – furniture sometimes wobbles, and that just adds some life to things! 😉

If the shelf wobbles immediately after moving it, you should check whether the fasteners at the corners are still secure. KALLAX shelves are often connected only with dowels and screws, which can loosen when moved.
