Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought several BILLY shelves from Ikea and am now facing the problem that the surface of the shelves gradually fades or changes color noticeably when exposed to sunlight. Since I cannot simply move the shelves because they are fixed in certain spots in the room, I am looking for effective yet practical ways to protect the shelves from this sun exposure.

I am interested in both preventive measures to reduce UV exposure and options to minimize or treat the color change afterward. Are there special UV protection films, clear sealants, or other methods you would recommend?

I would also appreciate hearing about your experiences regarding the effectiveness of different solutions and any specific considerations for BILLY shelves, since their surface is usually coated.

Thank you in advance for your tips!

Hello maxtan,

The most effective solution is UV protection films for windows. They block the majority of the sunlight that causes fading.

Alternatively, you can apply clear furniture protection coatings that are UV resistant. Make sure they are compatible with veneered or laminated wood.

Films or covers directly applied to the shelves also work, but they are usually impractical.

To protect BILLY shelves from color changes caused by sunlight, several measures are recommended:

1. UV window films: Proven to reduce UV exposure by up to 99%, significantly minimizing fading.

2. UV-resistant clear coatings: Special sealants based on acrylic or polyurethane are suitable for coated surfaces like BILLY shelves but should be tested first in an inconspicuous area.

3. Protect furniture from direct sunlight with curtains, blinds, or external shutters.

4. Avoid relocating the furniture if the sunlight intensity varies greatly.

The combination of window films and clear coatings offers the best long-term protection.

Is it still possible for you to block sunlight at the source—the window? This is usually the most effective approach.

I find it interesting that UV films and clear coatings are often recommended here, but the role of room temperature and humidity is rarely considered. These factors, in particular, further accelerate color changes on furniture surfaces.

I find this statement too general. Especially for BILLY shelves, custom-fit protective films can be a temporary solution, particularly if the room cannot be darkened. This allows targeted protection of vulnerable areas.

This is basically true but not always possible, for example in older buildings or apartments without suitable window frames.

What I would also suggest is regularly rotating the shelves or the items stored inside them. This can help achieve evenly distributed aging and prevent visually disturbing color changes caused by sun exposure.

Does anyone here have long-term experience with specific BILLY shelf protection products or can confirm that clear coatings do not alter or even damage the surface?
